Hi, I was wondering how many of each instrument are being accepted per school. Specifically at USC or Frost.
How many pass the pre screenings and how many are actually accepted.

I don’t know the size of those programs but for the east coast conservatories it is often one or two for each instrument.

It can really vary from year to year. Colleges take the talent that is presented to them (sometimes great, sometimes not to their standards) and then sometimes, certain instruments/students choose to go elsewhere. At Oberlin one year, e.g., there were no no jazz drummers, the next there were five. It’s really hard to tell, but music departments usually are willing to estimate, if you ask.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn’t sure if I should ask them directly or not, I guess it couldn’t hurt. It’s crazy the level these kids are playing at and how tough the competition is!

Ask. Some schools post the numbers on their websites (at least for classical) but if you can’t find it, I see nothing wrong with inquiring. Sometimes it depends strictly upon the numbers currently in studios while another year, numbers may be way up because more students than anticipated accepted offers.

I’ve checked the websites for the schools he’s applying to and don’t see any mention of the numbers. I will have to ask at his next auction (s). Is there anyway to tell based on the number of pre screenings that they are seeing? What I mean is if you see 30 of your instrument will they usually take at least 10percent or can you read nothing into the numbers that audition?

You really can’t read anything from the number of prescreenings or the number auditioning. Things are fluid; if students decide to stay on with a prof, there could be fewer openings than they planned on, or the quality at the auditions might not be up to standards so they don’t accept any. Obviously, that’s not the ideal- teachers need studios of manageable numbers and they need to allow room for make-up lessons. In classical, there will be more openings for violins than for clarinets, so instrument type also factors in.
Schools should be able to give you some sort of ball park number so go ahead and ask!

Call them—admissions get this sort of question all the time.

Ask the professor. My son did. At Frost. He was told 2-4. They took 2. he was one of them, so the question didn’t hurt :)

Congratulation!!

Yes, congratulations!!!
