Who has gotten an F before and still managed to transfer to a good school? If so what school was it?
I never got an F, but I have an NC - no credit because I got a C- once and I am wondering how much it will affect me.

It won’t affect admissions to almost any colleges except for a few–there are schools that seem a bit more “uptight” than others. I have no proof of this, but I imagine places like Reed and some of the Ivy schools may be a bit fussy. However, the real question is what is your overall GPA? If you have a 3.9 with just one or two glitches, 95% of colleges would look at your application seriously. If you have a 2.8 with just one or two glitches, the colleges that dip to accept 2.8 students would also look at your application seriously.

Honestly, I think most colleges would overlook the single NC–and you’ll get in based on the strength of your gpa and difficulty/content of your coursework.

Can you retake the class? If so, it shouldn’t be a big problem at all as long as it’s only 1 class.
