How many of you took/are taking AP calc as a junior?

I took AP Calc BC in my junior year. I did the following track (similar to those above):

7th: Algebra 1
8th: Geometry
9th: Algebra 2
10th: PreCalc
11th: AP Calc BC
12th: None! Couldn't dual enroll.

*** u took BC w/o AB??? how the heck??

My school does AB and BC as separate classes (so BC goes excruciatingly slow).

But others just have BC as an "Honors" AB class. They get through everything and do it faster so they have time to cover the BC material.

Chickenboi the thing that I don't really get it how people can jump from Pre-Calc to AP Calc BC? what? Well I am kind of doing the same thing Cuz I'm in Math analysis which is pre calc/ calc

all you smart people. we take alg I 8th grade, geo 9th, alg II 10th, pre-calc 11th, calc AB 12th. for the smart people... God some people i know will be in alg II in their senior year, going at an even slower rate than we are and learning much less. that makes me feel good. lol.

7th: Algebra 1
8th: Geometry
9th: Algebra 2 with Trig
10th: Math Analysis Honors
11th: Calculus BC
12th: Differential Equations

"Smart" people math path at my bad school:

7th: Pre-algebra
8th: Alg. I
9th: Geometry
10th: Alg. II
11th: Precal
12th: Calc AB/BC

It's a big deal if someone does Calc in Junior year. No one is doing that this year and last year only one Junior but I heard he failed. Also, only about 5% of seniors make it to Calc, and last year only 1 person out of 20 passed the AP Calc AB exam. It's sad. :(

DS took BC Calc in 10th.

6th - Alg I Honors
7th - Geom Honors
8th - Alg II 2nd sem only
9th - Functions (pre-calc, trig, with analysis and functions)
10th - Calc BC (they finish BC by mid-Jan., then keep going)
11th - Multivariable Calc (1st sem), Differential Equations (2nd sem), Discrete Math, AP Stat (taught as one sem class)
12th - Complex Analysis, Linear Alg, Advanced Geometry

He likes math.

Well, BC Calc has all the same material as AB, plus some chapters more. The AB class at my school goes pretty slowly, so for those kids who feel like AB would be slower than they'd like, they take BC instead. It's not too bad, really, unless you max out on math classes. I have AP stat left to take my senior year, so since there can't be a multivariable calc next year like they have this year, I'll have to take stat. =/

i'm a junior taking calc AB.
i'd say about 40-50% of the junior class at my school takes some form of calculus (either regular or AB).

however, few continue to go on and do BC for their senior year. weird huh?

i love calculus! it's easy and pretty fun! so much better than Math Analysis (<--yuck)

The "smart-people" track at our school:

7th: Alg I
8th: Geometry
8th (summer): Algebra II
9th: Precalculus
10th: AP Calc AB. Some people take AP Stats in addition.
11th: Calc II (1st semester)/Multivariable (2nd semester)
12th: Differential Equations (1st)/Matrix Theory (2nd)

Of course most of the people in this track end up dropping out. (primarily because of physics, though)

I am a junior enrolled in AP Calc BC (along with three others out of sixty-nine overall), and here is the advanced math track at my high school.

7th: Algebra 1
8th: Algebra 2
9th: Honors Geometry
10th: PreCalc
11th: AP Calc BC
12th: Calc 3 at Lehigh or Lafayette / AP Stat

here's mine

7th: Pre-Algebra
8th: Algebra1
9th: HonorsAlgebra2
10th: Honors Geometry
11th: Honors Precalc
12th: AP Calculus AB

7th : Math A- 1st year
8th: Math A- 2nd year
9th: Geometry/ Gemetry Honors
10th: Math B- 2nd year/ Honors
11th: Precalculus/ Honors (doubled up with AP Calculus AB/BC if you want) or Advanced Algebra (Precal for those are bad at math)
12th: AP Calculus AB/BC (or Multivariate Calc/Diff Eq/Linear Algebra if you had calc already) or Calculus Applications (for thos who are bad at math(

Here's the track in the program that ActuarialDJ and I each mentioned earlier in the thread:

Year 1: Honors Algebra I and Honors Algebra II

Year 2: Honors Geometry and Honors Math Analysis (Precalculus)

Year 3: Honors Calculus I (essentially, the AB part of the AP calculus syllabus)

Year 4: Honors Calculus II (first semester is the C part of the AP calculus syllabus, and second semester is linear algebra)

Year 5: Honors Calculus III (multivariable calculus)

Students take an admission test to get into the program, and come from all over our sprawling metropolitan area. It's a great group of classmates. Most students begin the program with Year 1 in eighth grade, but students who test into the program can start at an earlier age, so my son started at sixth-grade age. Students who are still of high school age when they complete the program can take a "special topics" course in math each semester until they graduate from high school, or take any of a variety of math courses in the regular U of MN curriculum through our state's dual-enrollment program for eleventh and twelfth graders.

The program director thinks it is wholly unnecessary for program students to take the AP calculus test ("Why take the test when you've already taken a college calculus course?") but I think I will encourage my son to take the AP calculus BC test this May, in his "ninth-grade" year. In general, alumni from this local program fare pretty well in gaining admission to math-demanding colleges and universities.

Huh ?

The "smart kids" track at my school is:

8th: Algebra
9th: Honors Geometry
10th: Algebra 2
11th: Pre-Calc
12: Calc AB

If a junior wants to take AB, they skip Pre-Calc. Some form of Algebra (either I or II) and geometry is required in high school to graduate. If a senior wants to take AB without skipping Algebra I, like I did, they have to skip Algebra II. We also don't offer anything above AB, so most juniors take Pre-Calc to get 4 years of math in.

We didn't have Calc BC, only AB. In elementary school, they jumpstarted several of us a year ahead, so it really wasn't hard to take Calc my junior year.

Here's what I took:
4th grade: Advanced 4th grade math
5th grade: 6th grade math
6th grade: H Pre-Algebra
7th grade: H Algebra
8th grade: H Geometry (Well...technically integrated math II)
9th grade: H Algebra II (technically integrated math III)
10th grade: IB Trig/Pre-Calc
11th grade: AP Calc AB
12th grade (Fall semester): Calc II at a community college. (Didn't take anything during the spring).

Any of you who are good at math could have easily done this, as skipping 5th grade math isn't hard at all. Oh, my younger sister and brother are a year ahead of that schedule (though they don't do integrated math anymore), but I think they'll take Alg. II twice. For multiple reasons, they don't want to take Calculus their sophomore year.

meh...i did 5th and 6th grade math at the same time. most kids in my school who take calc as juniors just skip 7th grade math.

BC this year
