Just wondering if any out-of-state students are planning to go to UW? Given the economic crisis experienced nationwide, I'm curious to know if OOS are considering UW after hearing their tuition hike up 28%?

I’d guess that in general, OoS students will be down across the nation as more students take the cheap option or undergrad in this economic climate. That said, even with the hike, uw is still one of the least expensive OoS public schools (around 35k right now?, while most prestigious ones [UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan, Illinois, etc] run $45k+), so maybe the decrease in OoS students wont’ be as great as it will be at other schools?

haha–thanks, Barrons.

To clarify for those who may not know…the tuition hike that is being PROPOSED calls for a 14% hike (about $900.00 per year per student) in resident tuition for each of the next TWO years. At that point, it is hoped that the maximum tuition increase can go back to 7%. Since many people on CC compare and evaluate tuition increases based on yearly change, I think it is somewhat misleading to comment that tuition is going up 28%. In addition, Emmert’s recent communications stated that families making less than $160,000 won’t feel any effects (I couldn’t quite figure out why…stimulus credits perhaps?)

Stats can be misleading…we know that. USC seems proud to have kept their increase at a mere 3.9% for next year…an ACTUAL dollar increase of almost $1,500 per student.

The UW has always been a great value. These are indeed challenging times…

After speaking with the Budget and Planning office at the UW, no one seems clear as to whether and how OOS tuition costs will be handled.

D was an OOSer who accepted admission in Dec., we just called and had to unaccept because of the uncertainty of the tuition. We have talked to Financial aide and even e-mailed Emmert’s office over the past several weeks Everyone was very nice but the bottom line is that they do not know what is going to happen with OOS tuition. With this uncertainty in mind, D will be no longer attending UW. We don’t want to take out loans for undergrad and the financial status is too uncertain for us. Anyway, this will open up a spot for someone:) UW is a great school and was D’s #`1 choice for 2 years. She is really sad. In-state tuition and fine aid is still a great deal for in-staters. Good luck all!

actually the total tuition increase will be 28%, and that is for in-state i dont even know if they are changing it more for oos. there is an article on seattletimes.com if you want to read it that explains it will go up by 14% this year, and ANOTHER 14% the following year. so it will be a 28% increase.

I am an OOS student but I am not fully committed to go yet.
I know this may be off-topic but, has any other OOS student’s received their award about financial aid?
I have yet to hear how much they are offering me yet. :(

Maybe I haven’t turned in the necessary forms or something?
Could someone please help me?
Here’s another thread that I have started and got a few answers from.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/686345-financial-aid-status.html
Thank you!

I’ve committed, but like a lot of the others here, I’m worried about tuition. Unfortunately, since UW was really my top choice, I only applied to three schools total… I was going to apply to some safeties in November, but I was recruited and basically guaranteed admission so that never happened. I only applied to two reach schools just to see what would happen…

Now I feel really bad for making my parents go through this whole thing with the tuition increases!

The economy has taken its toll on education… You shouldn’t blame yourself…The people who handle money should be held responsible

I posted this on the other thread, but here it is again…Due to tuition increase and financial uncertainty at UW, D just withdrew her OOS SIR. Took 2 hours to get through to counselor. She had been busy all morning getting withdrawls from OOS’ers. The thing is, I have talked to financial aid twice in the last month, they were very nice but said the in-state tuition is set by the state but the OOS tuition is set by the Regents and it may not be until Mid May to Mid July that they will set OOS tuition. I do know that it has risen as estimated 7% for sure. This will be too late for OOSers who need to make other plans by May 1. D was going to turn down UCLA and Berkely with scholarships for UW but it doesn’t make sense anymore given the state of the economy and budget problems. She now going to be a Bruin. She REALLY wanted to by a Husky! She was luck she had a great back-up options.

Your daughter must be crazy to choose UW over Berkeley or UCLA unless she wants to be a nurse or a marine biologist. I got rejected from Berkeley, UCSD, Davis, UCSB, and Cal Poly, but got accepted at UW so I’m definatly attending regardless of the cost

Hey guys!

I just checked my UW email, and according to President Emmert, the tuition increases are for RESIDENTS ONLY.

So I guess that’s some better news for us.

I am from Arizona, just decided to go! Tuition cost doesn’t really matter because it will still be cheaper then the other schools. Also got into the Freshman direct program at Foster. Hope to see some of you there!

Welcome to the “club,” schindlr88. :)

Thanks! …

ill be attending from california!

Well… I’m from Vancouver BC and I’m going to UW First choice baby, american schools have more spirit than the ones here for sure

Good choice!

ceetie bee- on his blog, president emmert said that the 14% each year for two years is for residents only, and they haven’t actually decided on out of state tuition yet. idk if that means they aren’t going to change it at all or if they are going to make it the same increase as in state or what. i think someone else posted this earlier but regents decide out of state tuition, not the state and that usually isn’t decided til mid-may through mid-july which is why so many out of state people are cancelling or just not enrolling at all–it’s really uncertain.

i agree with mcf11, if you read this article it will explain alot…
