I heard on the UVa site that UVa and UNC defer most of the out of state applicants from ED/EA.....is this true?

Here are the most recent statistics on EA Acceptance. Last year (2004) UNC received 9,113 applications for Early Decision. (Remember, they eventually receive around 19,000 applications.) Of those 9,113 applicants, 5,206 were from in-state and 3,907 were from out-of-state.

Of the 5,206 applicants from in-state, 2,875 were accepted early decision, 1,268 were deferred, and the remainer (1,063) were rejected. Of the 3,907 from out-of-state, 601 were accepted early decision, 570 were deferred, and 2,736 were rejected.

29% of those deferred are eventually accepted (but I don't know how that breaks down for out-of-state versus in-state).

I found this info at a counselor newsletter website. Of course, things could be quite different from year to another.

You know, I think I misread one of those statistics. UNC defers 21% of the early applicants and eventually takes 29% of the "early applicants." I guess that means they only accept 8% of those deferred.

gah...thats a 15.4% acceptance rate.

thanks for that stats jacksongrl! they were really helpful

And wow, that is VERY low for out of staters.......that is like ivy league admissions......now im very scared!
