How many people apply for merit scholarships?

I'm just wondering, does anybody have an estimate of how many students apply by November 15th? Obviously Early Decision applications were due then (so based on last year's data that should be about 130 applicants), but what about regular decision folk applying for the merit scholarships?
If anyone has any idea/any other insight about these scholarships, feel free to respond!

not sure… i applied and havent got any news yet. and i heard they’d invited 100+ to the campus.

When I applied (which was 5 years ago, mind you), 200-ish people applied for merit scholarships [iirc]. I can only imagine the number has risen since then, as have the number of people applying to Scripps generally, but I believe the number they invite to campus has shrunk and it has become a more discerning process in that regard.

You’ll know soon, so no point agonizing. Distract yourself with tv, or reading or playing geography quizzes on Sporcle. :)

If you receive the letter for being a merit based scholarship finalist does that mean that you are accepted into the school and are being considered for the merit based scholarship or does it mean that you are being considered for the scholarship and admission still?

It means you’re qualified to be accepted but it isn’t a guarantee. Lots of things could change their minds, like semester grades or behavior on the scholar weekend.

Scripps just sent emails to people who did not qualify for the merit based scholarships. I’m guessing people who have qualified are also getting emails.

^ I can confirm that. Got my congratulatory email a few hours ago. Be nice to know how many got the same letter…

Hmmm. I applied for merit scholarships too and I haven’t received any email from Scripps yet. Disappointing… I wonder what the delay is about!

since athena mentioned that scripps had just sent out emails to ppl who did not qualify for scholarships. so…i think we r getting emails either way. maybe they r still working on it. so no need to be disappointed at this time :)

My D got an email telling her that she was NOT being considered for The big merit scholarships and that there were 900 applicants. We thought she would at least get a fly-out. :frowning:

I’m thinking that Scripps will have a far less than 30% admission rate this year.

My D got her email last night telling her she is a scholarship finalist. She is quite excited!

Nevermind-- got an email last night telling me that I’m a finalist!

Congratulations, everyone! I received an e-mail last night notifying me that I was a finalist as well. Does anyone know how many finalists were chosen?

havent received anything yet… well i know i probably r not in the final list…but i’m still waiting for the email to tell me that i’m not being considered…

Sorry, I didn’t post the correct number of applicants. D’s letter said 700 not 900.

I’m confused–in the past all the JES finalists were invited to the scholars weekend. The way they phrased the letter sounds like on the actual recipients are invited in late April. Did they change this? I was very excited for the weekend :(

Neggs, you are right. The finalist notification letter definitely says that recipients will be invited to visit on any of several weekends in April.
