i just got waitlisted at uva...its my first choice. I know there arent any particular facts yet for this year, but i was wondering how many people usually get waitlisted from the 24000 kids that apply. since 280 kids got in from the waitlist last year, i want to know how many other kids were waitlisted last year so that i can have an idea at what my chances are.

The size of the waiting list isn’t known just yet…we’ve made offers (and to be honest, I didn’t run that stat and won’t have time to this week). The size of the list doesn’t tell you about the odds of getting a spot. We won’t know anyone’s chances until after May 1st, which is when the students who were offered spots in the class must reply.

Looking back at last year’s waiting list posts, I can see that there were about 1700 students on the list back then. We made 240 offers, but I don’t remember the break down of offers when it comes to VA or OOS and the four different schools.

Remember that there are EIGHT different populations in the class.

okay thanks!
also, would letters of interest or additional recommendations help? If i was to get another recommendation it would be different than the others one i had previously sent. Does the admissions committee take into consideration the interest that people have in the school when selecting off the waitlist? for example, would you pick a person with a 3.9 that clearly wants to go to your school and has made it their first choice or would you just pick the person with the 4.0?

I watched this one documentary where this girl was wait listed to Harvard and she had her principal send a recommendation.

Be sure to read the Waiting List FAQ page. We address what you should do there. The link was in the letter.

I already did, but it didnt specify on letters of interest, which is why i asked here. Also, i was a little confused when it says to send your final grades. My school does not end school until mid june, so should i just resend my 1st semester grades? Unless you did not receive them the first time they were sent

Some people get third quarter grades or finish a second trimester in the spring. Those folks should send updated grades when they get them.

It’s fine to send a letter of interest. Sorry, I thought they were covered along with sending rec letters on that FAQ page.

if I have not received any notification from the Waitlist by the end of May, should I also send in my quarter 4 grades?

Also, in regards to new activities and additions to my application, would minor details such as awards from photography competitions or movement from being Vice President to President of a club make much of a difference?

Thanks so much for your time Dean J (and other members)!

^Do you have any earlier grades? Because Dean J said somewhere on CC that last year they started making offers as early as the 3rd or the 4th of May. Personally, I think you should update your accomplishments with the ones you mentioned because it shows interest and its better than having nothing at all.

According to this [news release that just came out](http://www.virginia.edu/uvatoday/newsRelease.php?id=14562) 3,833 people were placed in the waitlist.

Thanks, G. There are numbers I don’t even see. :)

We have offered the WL to those folks. Many won’t accept a spot, so the actual WL will be smaller.

We didn’t make an effort to grow or shrink the WL this year. Percentage wise, it’s probably a little smaller (WRT the size of the applicant pool) even if the raw number is a little higher.

Hope this makes sense. I’m tapping on my phone, using that CC app.

I have to say, I am so glad that I was part of the Class of '08 and not '15 I would have never got in with those SAT scores and probably the GPA’s that are seen now. Very impressive.
