Does anybody know how many incoming freshman are invited to interview for this scholarship? How many in the end actually get it?

Also, how difficult is it to get renewal (do they only renew like, 1/4 of the scholarships each year)?

i don't even know anything about this scholarship, i wanna know too!

:BUMP: (10char)

What's the next step after I submit my application?

Be patient. The scholarship office will work night and day to sort all the applications we receive and get them to local scholarship districts across the country! If you are a freshman and if, on March 30, you find out that you were accepted to Cal, you may receive a phone call sometime between April 1-24 from your local scholarship district chair inviting you to an interview. There is no need to contact our office during this time as we already have your contact information and will get in touch with you if need be. Please note that not all applicants are invited to an interview. Transfer applicants will be notified in mid-June if they have advanced to the Finalist round of contention, during which the next stage will be an interview.

When will I know whether or not I have received the Alumni Scholarship?

You will be contacted during the month of July to let you know if you've advanced to the finalist round of contention for the Leadership Award. Interviews will take place in September.

Freshmen applicants will absolutely know by April 25. We set this date so that you know the results of your scholarship application before the May SIR deadline. We feel it is important to know whether you will be receiving this financial help before you make your college decision. However, transfer applicants will not know the final results of their application until September, as we will not finish interviews until then.

Is the scholarship renewable?

Yes. The scholarship is renewable for up to a total of 5 years. However, you are required to submit a renewal application each year. Renewal is a competitive process and you are not guaranteed the scholarship every year. We want to make sure that you continue to develop your leadership qualities while at Cal.

so no e-mail but rather phone call for freshman? also, it is possible to get both regents and alumni right?

I'm so confused! I thought we were getting an e-mail?

I submitted the application, and haven't heard anything. I wait for a phone call?

I got an email, not a phone call.

I think it depends on who your district chair is.

So, nobody has actual statistics?

Why don't you PM the new Berkeley guy on CC? Shrug I google'd for you but found nothing.

There were more than 6000 apps this year for the alumni scholarship- they do a huge prelim reading & ranking and choose a cut off for semi-finals. The semi-finalists go to the region for interviews and selection. Each region has a different number of awards, based on that areas fund-raising and numbers.

My inside source says they think it is 250 or so awarded, but cannot recall for certain and will check when next at the alumni office.

You DO NOT get notified of semi-finalist status.

Feel free to ask me any specific questions as I have a source who works there who will clarify things as able

Here it is from my resource:

you are only running against people renewing, but you do have
to reapply. The continuing application asks different questions, specific to how you've continued and expanded leadership while at cal....not everyone will get renewed, but having already been a scholar CAN give you an edge on continuing students that are new applicants, ie did not have the scholarship previously, because "supposedly" we will have gotten to know your name, face, and personality through PARTICIPATION in alumni events....you will also be reinterviewed, which gives you an opportunity to express yourself and show the alum why you deserve to keep the scholarship.
--there are 500 renewal awards every year to compliment the 250 freshman/junior transfer awardees, for a total 750 alumni scholars at any given time.

of freshman invited to interview will depend on district chairs--ie they are in charge of scheduling interviews in their area and the number of interviews they hold will be proportional to the number of students they have who made the cut-off in scoring.--its not a fixed number.

so to reiterate, 250 incoming students are awarded a scholarship, and 500 students are able to renew, allowing for a total of 750 leadership scholars.

anything else?

Thanks so much somemom!

Would you happen to know how many people are invited to interview?

you say you will NOT get notified of semi-final status....but then how do you know if you're interviewing to move onto the finals?

Sorry, I'm confused on that part, and thanks!

I'm also confused about this semi-finalist/finalist status, i thought finalists were the ones who were interviewed.

My understanding is that the Alumni office overseas the determination of semi-finalist status- they read every single app, score them all, arrive at a cut off score and then send to each alumni group the ones above the cut off. That would be semi-finalist. Then, as it was explained to me, each alumni regional group must interview some number of the students passed on to them.

You only know when YOU are contacted for interview status- I guess that would be a finalist position- so you don't know whether you made that cut to be forwarded. It is possible some regions interview every one on the list and other regions interview less.

Larger regions have more scholars. A small region, in terms of numbers and funds, may only award 1, a larger region 2-3-4 scholarships. There are more than 100 regions, if I recall accurately.

Please forgive me if I am off on tiny details, things change each year, and I have heard this info for several years.

I can tell you the Alumni office is a great group of people, enthusiastic about putting together the scholarships and other connections for the people who gain the scholarships. It is a great affiliation if you are awarded it, and UCB will reduce loans and not reduce grants if you obtain the award!

I would think that if 250 are awarded, and every single region is supposed to rank alternates that they must interview at least 500, but that is just a guesstimate.

Feel free to ask any specific questions and I will ask for you and pass on the answer. Having been in your spot, wondering how it works, my source does not mind providing clarity ;)

Wow, only 250 awarded, 500+ interviewed???

I really hope a lot of potential scholars decide not to attend Cal.

PS: Unusual situations and people traveling or overseas will do phone interviews with the alumni office

I am guessing as to how many are interviewed...if 250 are awarded, then at least 500 must be interviewed, that just makes sense. But I will ask.

Isn't it nice to know that the money is not wasted if some one is awarded it but does not choose Cal; nice that they have alternates!

Yeah, i'm really glad they have alternates, and again, thanks so much for all of the info.

I'm really nervous about the interview this weekend. I didn't get Regents and didn't get any money from National Merit, so this is the last chance I have to reduce the financial toll of Berkeley.

Would you happen to know the sorts of questions that the interviewers ask?

Good luck all other applicants!

I will ask, not sure if they want to reveal that or not- maybe they want to see how you think on your feet, but I can say this:

Advice from the inside:

Be yourself. Be interesting (assuming that is not an oxymoron )
Be unique
Be memorable
Talk about things you want to do or get involved in at Cal

Don't worry about being the perfect 4.0/2400- show your personality and show how your being on campus will bring something interesting to Berkeley

Last year, ~2000 people applied for the scholarship as incoming freshmen. And 250 got it. You have a good chance of renewal if you're involved at Cal (leadership and extracurriculars).

For my interview, they asked the basic logistical questions (why Cal, what made you want to apply for the scholarship, tell me about yourself, etc).
