^ ne1 have insight into how 8k, 9k totals are below average?

Sports61kh

That is exactly the point to realize. With far more points possible from other factors than from stats, using only the average stats in the formula gives you too low a cutoff prediction.

It is not just socioeconomic, although that is the largest grouping of factors. There are also academic achievement factors -- such as credits for more than the minimum of a-g course and credit for ELC. Points for talents. Points for sustained involvement in college preparatory activities. Points for non-economic hardships. Points for serving our country. Points for first generation to attend college. Points for leadership roles in school.

I created a spreadsheet, put in the admitted averages from last year, and bumped it up by a completely arbitrary amount. I found some guesses from prior years as to the cutoff point, adding a safety margin because this year is a peak for applications, and ended up with a target. I guessed what points would be assigned to my application and the result seemed above the cutoff estimate. Turned out to be correct.

I used similar logic to build a spreadsheet for the point systems for UCSC and UCSD, predicting acceptance and rejection respectively, which matched the outcomes. If it were close, or if rejected when I guessed acceptance, it would be time to call the admissions office, find out how they scored my application and if there was a reasonable case I could make that more points were due, I would file an appeal.

The UCSD factors are 74% based on academics compared to UCD which weighted academic factors at only 68% of the decision. Thus, the extra points for talent, leadership and other factors were smaller in proportion than for the other numerical UC schools. In this way, UCSD is probably the most stats-oriented of the formulaic schools (excluding Cal and UCLA which are more holistic).

wow good stuff rider

so what would a regular middle-class person who hasn't done any "special" (non-68% academic) stuff need to get accepted? if there are only about 8500 pts for scores/GPA, and assuming this was a pretty good but not spectacular student, would that mean he/she has a slim chance? it would seem like he/she needs 2400, 4.5, etc. u know what i mean?

Hi Sports61kh

Yes, I guess if you have qualify for none of the other points and are applying to an impacted major that had a cutoff of 8000, it would require somethink like a 4.2 UC GPA, 2200 SAT I and two 700 SAT IIs.

However, if you took 40 academic courses instead of 35, that would allow a 4.1, 2150 and two 650s to get to the same cutoff. Someone who took 45 academic courses could get 4.0, 2000, and two 650s to produce the same cutoff.

If that student also has some leadership, a 3.8, 1950, and two 650s would also hit the minimum.

My point is that those other factors are equal to some significant shift in stats. Even a little bit from them swings things a lot. The first hypothetical student would just qualify with a 4.2 GPA and 2200 SAT while the last hypothetical student I mentioned would qualify identically but with a 3.8 plus 1950 SAT. The only difference was a single leadership role and having taken extra electives for a total of 45 a-g courses over the four years of HS.

which majors are impacted? any in the college of biological sciences?

yeah i heard biological sciences and business administration were impacted majors

it seems as though UCD was more strict in their admissions decisions this year...is that simply because they just want to have a more competitive edge? it surprises me that a lot of qualified applicants got denied. even applicants who seemed more qualified than me academically got denied, and i got in under biological sciences, which was apparently an impacted major

i got around 8800, and i was accepted

wait jhuscla, is it just biological sciences the specific major that's impacted? or every major in the whole college of bio sci?

also, if u make it over the cutoff pt, r u guaranteed admission?

I was accepted (Biological Sciences) with about 9700 points. (OOS)

Friend of D has less than 8000 but was accepted.

There is no way for anyone to know for sure what points were assigned to them by UC Davis admissions. At best these are all guesses.

wat major, columbia?

has anyone here gotten into engineering with an 8500 or less? :-)

10640

pengsta rejected?? ***
u deserve davis!
