How many points is the essay worth out of 800? And also, how much is the Grid -in math problems worth also? Thank you!

i believe the essay is worth 200 points, but I could be wrong about that. I think I remember my SAT prep teacher saying that once though. Also, the grid in math counts the same as the regular math, it isn't in a separate section. Like, I don't think they give you a separate score for that like they do with the essay.

The essay is worth varying numbers of points. The sample tests in the Blue Book allocate it about 120 points, but actual scoring of recent tests in the real world takes into account score equating on the writing section so that the essay by itself isn't worth a fixed number of possible points.

The small number of items on the math grid-in section makes that section even less of a concern. Just do your best on everything you have to do.

Good luck on your tests.

Yeah, there's no fixed amount associated with it, although if you bomb it really bad points start falling off. If you're weak on the essay, a strong grammar score (pretty much perfect) can offset 1 or 2 pts on the essay for an 800.

Grid-In maths are worth the same amount as normal math questions. The only leeway you have here in exchange for not having 5 choices to choose from is that, if you get them wrong, it won't count against you (you won't be subtracted .25).

I see thanks guys! So 120 points is what I hear? That sounds reasonable. I think 200 is a bit too much.

"Writing Section Subscores
The raw scores for the multiple-choice writing section are converted to scaled scores that are reported on a 20-80 scale. Every SAT Reasoning Test contains a 25-minute essay. The essay subscore is reported on a 2-12 scale. (Essays that are not written on the essay assignment, or which are considered illegible after several attempts at reading, receive a score of 0.) Each essay is independently scored from 1 to 6 by two readers. These readers' scores are combined to produce the 2-12 scale. If the two readers' scores differ by more than one point, a third reader will score the essay. The multiple-choice writing section counts for approximately 70% and the essay counts for approximately 30% of your total raw score, which is used to calculate your 200-to-800 score."

Mr S,

When SAT results become available, a thread will usually be created in the 'SAT Preparation' forum to build a profile of scores. Here's what the 3/10/07 SAT looked like for writing based on CC user input. This should give you some idea of how the essay score is factored in.
