Last year when we were visiting BC the school newspaper reported that BC Admissions had received nearly 34,000 applications. Have they reported those numbers yet? I was wondering if they are expereincing a decrease due to the economy.

The numbers are usually reported in the school newspaper, but it's not publishing now because students are still on Christmas break. Classes start again this Wednesday (Jan. 14) so check the BC website in another week or two.

Today's edition of "The Heights" reported that there were 5,400 EA applications this year (compared to 6,700 last year) and 2,400 were accepted.

RD numbers are not available yet, but John Mahoney, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, is predicting a 5 - 6 % decline in applications overall. He thinks there will be around 29,000 total applications -- down from 30,850 last year.

I guess we should be pretty happy about that, correct?

Thanks for the info. What a big accpetance rate on the EA! BC's policy of EA as long as you didn't send an ED kept many kids from applying first round.

I wonder why I thought it was 34,000 applicants last year... ( I also remember hearing it was 32,000...)

On the BC website, they go out of their way to stress that EA is more selective than RD. So is that not really true?

It is true that BC has always been more selective in the EA round and really discourages any but the strongest candidates from applying EA. However, I think this is an unusual year and historical trends probably aren't good indicators of what's happening this year.

BC may well have hedged its bets and taken in more than usual in the EA round this year because they weren't sure how many RD applications there would be (since EA decisions go out before the RD deadline) or maybe they were concerned about what kind of yield they might get from those accepted. Expensive private schools like BC are clearly going to take some hits with economic conditions being as bad as they are right now.

Does anyone know how many EA applicants (of 6,700) were accepted last year?

I think the reason for the high acceptance rate is the economic situation... BC does not give the best aid and it is expensive. I wager a lot of the EA acceptees (myself included) will not be able to go because of financial reasons. Also, BC is a safety for many very strong students, so a lot of people end up going to stronger schools (when I was at the college for the info session, the adcom was actually proud of their low(ish) yield... he said it's because so many of the students are also accepted to ivies... heh). That might be an especially big problem this year because of the economy and the Ivies' new FA policies.
