Hi everyone! I was just wondering if it would be okay to send in 3 rec letters to my colleges? Most require 2 teacher recommendations, so I have lined up my AP English teacher and BC Calc teacher to write those, but I was wondering if it would be overkill to also have my Orchestra director write one? I have known him since I was 10 and have a very good rapport with him, so I know he'd write a very personal, complimentary letter that could give a different perspective from my other academic teachers. Would it be okay for me to send in all 3 letters to my schools? Thanks!

Do they have limit on how many rec letters you can send? Ask the admission.
One more Rec wouldn’t hurt at all, and if it gives the admission office a different perspective of you, then go for it.

Okay great, thanks Paul! Most do have a limit, but I don’t think 3 letters would go over. It was more a matter of whether they’d appreciate the 3rd or be annoyed by having too many

Okay
But, if they tell you that 2 is maximum, don’t send it

Perfect. Thanks!

The common app (or school web site) says how many are required and how many are allowed. Any one that “allows” 3 or more works, skip the orchestra teacher on the others (unless it’s going to be a great rec and the school only requires one core teacher, then maybe send the stronger of the two teachers and the orchestra one).

D and I just made a list for this yesterday as she has a very strong third rec that isn’t a core teacher too.

Also check your schools – I’ll bet not all require 2 LORs. Some want only 1, some want zero. DO NOT send those schools your 3 LORs.

One extra is fine, especially if it address a different non-academic area. I wouldn’t send more than that.
