How many SAT subject tests do I need?

Most colleges say that they only need two SAT subject tests. However, does it give me an advantage if I submit more than two? I got 750 on Mathematics Level 2 and 800 on World History. I will receive my scores for Mathematics Level 2 (retook it) and U.S. History this Thursday. Should I take more SAT subject tests? For reference, I am planning on applying to Ivy League or highly competitive schools.

The rule I’ve heard is to aim for 3 subject tests. If you want to apply to highly competitive schools, remember to aim for 750+ (which I assume you will do a great job with based on your other scores)

If you are applying for engineering or science major, you may have to take another because a number of colleges require a math and science for those majors. Otherwise you need only two (in differnet subjects) at colleges that require them. Most of the colleges that require subject tests say they use the highest two if you submit more. Harvard and Princeton say they consider any submitted but consider the highest two the important scores.

Note that Georgetown and Johns Hopkins, neither of which require subject tests, recommend three and thus you should probably have a third one if applying to either of those.

Other than possibly needing that science depending on major or a third one for Gtown or JH, taking a third does not really add anything of real value if you already have two high scores. There are some colleges that require, or use even if not required, a language SAT for placement after you have been admitted and some will even give you college credit for a high language SAT score. Thus, a language SAT may be an option even if you do not need it for the decision to admit.

Thank you for the advice! It is a burden off my shoulders.
