How many schools are you applying to?

I'm applying to 13. I've tried to narrow it down, but the fact that the admissions game is so competitive these days, I don't want to regret not applying when it could have made a difference. Any advice?

If you are applying to lots of schools that are very selective, or are shopping for a good FA or merit aid deal, then you often do need to apply to many schools.
Just make sure your list is not too top-heavy; have plenty of targets/matches and safeties (including affordable safeties).

I have applied to 4 schools with early deadlines (early decision at Boston U, U of Florida, George Mason U, and Pitt), and I will apply to 4 more (ED II at George Washington U, American U, U of South Carolina, and West Virginia U) if I don’t get into BU. So a total of 8.

5
mcgill, northeastern (ea), u of vermont (ea), nyu, upenn (ed)
if i dont get into any early, im applying to gw and american too

I will be applying to 3 all Regular Decision. George Mason, James Madison, and Virginia Tech. I’m really worried though! Could y’all chance me please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1408561-what-my-chances-gmu-jmu-vtech.html

<10. BU, BC, WUSTL (ED), Brandeis, Brown, and CMU. Still looking for some safeties though.

12, with 5 reaches and 3 safeties

9-12 I think. still unsure about Yale (dad thinks I should, I’m ambivalent) and a couple safeties. It’s a lot, but the more, within reason, the better because I have a feeling I might not get into a lot of my competitive schools.

I applied to 7 (6 matches, 1 safety). But then again, i didnt apply to any places with cutthroat admissions (30% or less acceptance) nor was i searching for financial aid. If that is what you are trying to do, I would recommend applying to 12+ schools

Sent from my YP-G1 using CC

5, with two safeties, one low match, and two reaches.

I applied to 7 (2 Safety, 4 Matches, 1 Reach), but at one point was considering applying up to 10+ schools. I think 8-12 is the average and you shouldn’t really worry; you’re just casting a wide net :D

I applied to 10. One of my friends applied to 17, but he hired a service to help him complete all his applications (he wrote the essays, but they filled out all his apps with all his info).

Isn’t it ironic that the conventional wisdom for maximizing financial aid requires applying to more schools and thus paying more fees?

Isn’t it ironic that the conventional wisdom for dealing with the low admit rates at highly selctive colleges requires applying to more schools and thus reducing the admit rate?

I agree with the reality of conventional wisdom in both cases, but there must be some way to stop the madness. Unfortunately, colleges have an incentive to keep students applying to more schools (more application fees) and students don’t seem to have any power.

By the way, DS is appying to seven schools: Duke, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Case Western Reserve, Purdue, Georgia Tech, and University of Kentucky. He will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering, which narrows down the list a good bit right off the bat.

He already has a full ride offer from UK, so his other choices were at schools that are more appealing to him than UK while still offering merit scholarships (or at least generous need-based).

I’m thinking 3. Because I’ve already applied to one and I’m gonna use an Immediate Decision program through another. Then I’ll apply to the local college just in case something comes up.

S1 applied to one (state school; auto-accept) and may apply to a reach RD. He decided to graduate early…
S2 is applying to 7 or 8 (2 reaches, 4 or 5 state schools [incl the S1 did NOT apply to; it’s auto-admit, too], and a LAC [reach/match]). He has a list of 14, but I hope he’ll be satisfied w/ his EA and state school results… :)

rmldad: it is madness at its finest! S2 is applying to one free app school (so far), which gives us some joy. Lol.
Good luck to your son and congratulations on his outstanding admit to UK!
