All UCs? Im still debating but more than likely ill be applying to UCLA UCSD UCR UCI and a couple CSU i just done know much about CSU and which would be best for my major. my professors at ccc hold CSULB very highly. Im trying to do some research first tho but im thinking CSULB CSULA and ether CSUF or Cal Polly Pomona

Admittedly, I don’t know much about the CSU’s either and didn’t really bother applying to them; however, just on face value, out of your list I think CSULA doesn’t belong. Granted this is based on my extremely esoteric experience, but I had a professor from CSULA for an anthropology course that moonlighted as a CC professor and his class was a complete joke. He even offered us extra credit for attending his actual CSULA lectures and I just was generally unimpressed that that was a university level lecture and with the entire campus/facilities. It’s an extremely specific instance, so take it for what it’s worth. But in my opinion, it doesn’t seem like CSULA is one of the premiere CSU’s that gets significant funding nor elite, distinguished faculty.

It seems like you’re looking to stay in the southern California region based on your selection, so you’d probably want to consider SDSU. As a current UCSD student, I know we have a couple programs that collaborate with SDSU and I’ve presented research presentations at various conferences/events and I’ve seen SDSU students of various disciplines presenting their research also. So to me it would seem like they have a lot of similar resources at SDSU as we do at a UC.

Also, it’s completely shallow and I’m not sure how much you can infer from it, but you may want to take a look at acceptance rates. It seems like a lot of the elite CSU’s have an acceptance rate pretty close to ~30-35%, which is impressive. CSULB, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, CSUF all seem to be around that range (at least according to google). At the very least it tells you that they can afford to be more selective in admissions which usually correlates with having better faculty and generally better academic programs.

Lastly, I wouldn’t stress too much about having CSU’s as a back up if you’re applying to UCLA. Most people that have a realistic shot at applying to UCLA are probably going to get admitted into one of the lower level UC’s, like UCR. I think if you have around a 3.3GPA or higher you’re undoubtedly going to get into a few of the UC’s on your list.
