I'd get rid of some safeties and super-reaches...no use wasting extra time and money.

I would suggest 10 to 12. 3 to 4 reach,3 to 4 match, and 4 safety.

4 safety??? If your safety is really a safety then you need only one, or if your paranoid, 2.

But what about the phenom of schools rejecting kids b/c they can tell they're a safety. They assume the kid won't enroll, so they just reject him to protect the yield.

I suppose 1 safety is enough if it's a really low safety. But, let's face it. There are no sure things these days.

We're still a year away. But, I think I'll encourage Son to do 3-6-3.

DougBetsy, I think of a true safety as a guaranteed state school. For instance, some schools will say "You are an auto admit if you are in the top 25% of your class and have at least an 1100 CR+M." If you know your stats work, you're in.

I'm doing the inverted triangle as well. 1 safety, 3 matches, ~7 reaches

Everybody has different standards about "reach"," match" and safety". As I knew my daughter's friend applied 8 schools, 3 rejected, 4 waitlisted and 1 accepted (safety) which she did not want to go, it is scary!

8-11, I'm currently iffy on 3.
2 safeties, the rest range from match to semi-reach

As of right now I'm doing 6, 3 reaches, 1 high match/low reach, 1 match, and 1 safety.

There are two types of safeties - admissions safeties and financial safeties. You need to know that you can definitely get in somewhere that you can afford, or at least probably get in somewhere that you can definitely afford.

I am applying to five:
1 super-safety
4 match/reaches

I don't know but I applied to like 18 schools and I got into like 15 of them. So many acceptances. I recommend you forget about those safeties (save like 1) and go bezerk with matches and reaches because your going to get SO MANY acceptances, its going to be pretty crazy. More than half the schools that acceptedyou your aren't even going to consider going to anyways. So bank on those reaches.

Oh. I'll have to go see if Maryland has any of those.

Although, that's part of our dilemma. None of Maryland's publics would really be a fit for Son. Oh well. We'll look anyway.

1 uber-safety (my stats are well beyond those of the kids who got full rides)
1 safety
2 matches
3 reasonable reaches
3 big reaches (Ivies)

And I can honestly say I would be perfectly happy to attend any school on my list.

We are leaving in a week for a campus tour of 8 schools, so the list may change:

5 Safeties/match (1 in-state)
5 Reaches/match (1 is super reach)

There is only 1 in-state school that has D's program. The other 9 schools are OOS, so right off the bat, I view them as match/reach since her chances will be slim, espeically since 8 of the schools are in Florida where just about EVERYONE applies. Two of the schools are private, so I'd be curious to see if she does get in, what the financial aid package would look like.

Ok. If I don't get in EA to Georgetown.

1 in-state safety
1 low match
2 matches
3 reaches

If I do...

1 in-state safety (applying there in september rolling admissions)
5-6 reaches

About 15

4 Safeties

3 Matches

8 Reaches

8 reaches, 4 matches, 3 safeties, and 5 in the UK. I aint taking any chances after a gap year.

Right now 3. I'll probably end with a list of 4 or 5.
