How many school's are you applying to?

Not sure how many to apply to. What seems to be the average?

5 seems average, i applied to 6 in my year

I’m applying to 9 or 10. I’d say that depending on the selectivity of the schools that you are applying, 6 to 10 is a good amount, and maybe a couple more if you are weighing financial aid options

12 in total.

If you can manage it well, you can apply to only a few. I applied to a top public with rolling admissions (that’s highly coveted by many). Was accepted in October of my Sr year. Since I knew that worse-case scenario, I’d still be going to a great school, I then went for some reaches (2 Ivies) and another 3 schools with renown engineering departments (just to compare FA).

The last three all waived my fees because they were courting me. In the end, my energies weren’t spent like I see many other CC denizens. (I was incredibly blessed: all schools accepted me)

I’m applying to 9, not including UCs. I’m just worried I’m not getting into the school I want to.

bump…anyone else have input? i have 4 schools on my list so far, but I’m afraid 3 are reaches and one is a maybe

i’m attempting to do 24 haha. not sure if that’s going to work out so well, though :)

average seems to be around 8
most people set a limit at 12 max

I would suggest 10. 3 safety, 4 match, 2 reach, and 1 dream

7 or 8 and my in-state safety.

It’s going to depend on you. There is no magic set of numbers. Just make sure there’s at least one you’re sure you can get into and pay for, that you’d actually want to attend. From there on, do whatever you want. Be limited only by what you want and what you can manage. You could apply to 3 or 13. It depends on you.

9-11. It makes sense to cast a wide net if you are a gifted but not superstar student. But, IMO, more than 12 is pushing it.

T26E4, Did you end up at UMichigan? How was the FA package at the school that accepted you compared to the others? My son is applying to 17 schools total, plus 5 UC’s of which 2 of these are ELC UC’s, or 22 schools in all. If he gets accepted to UMichigan EA, I’m hoping he does NOT apply to all of the schools on his list.

I agree with BillyMc. I’m only applying to 6, and I’m comfortable with it.
