How many schools attend each Unified session?

Is it an advantage to audition in Chicago or New York over Vegas or LA?

From what I have heard about past years, there are more schools at Chicago Unifieds than the others. However, there are also schools that hold auditions the same days as Unifieds, often in the same building, but their names are not on the National Unified list. Apparently, the schools are only put on the list on the National Unified website IF they attend Unifieds in all 4 cities. So, you need to figure out what schools you want to audition at, find out whether that school is either at Unifieds or in the particular Unified city the same days, and then figure out which city makes the the most sense to go to. Sorry if that sounded confusing…

I believe schools have to be invited to be an official participating Unifieds school. So you have the official Unified Auditions schools, which are the ones listed on the Unifieds website:
[National Unified Auditions](http://unifiedauditions.com/universities.html)

As monkey13 noted, you also have programs that are not on the website but that hold auditions at the same time and in the same location as Unifieds. In the past, there have been more of these schools at the Chicago location than at the others.

At least during my D’s audition cycle, the Las Vegas auditions were different from the others in that you did one audition in front of all of the schools, as opposed to doing individual auditions for each school you wanted. So that would be something to check on if you are interested in the Las Vegas site.

Dr. John Stefano from Otterbein normally posts about the Unified auditions. He hasn’t posted anything for the 2013 auditions yet, but here is the thread from 2012:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1151950-unified-auditions-2012-a.html</a></p>

At one point someone suggested starting a list of schools that are not listed on the Unifieds website but who offer auditions at the same time/city as the Unifieds. This might be a good place to start that for 2013.

Below are the schools on the list from The Palmer House . . . I added the three with asterisks because I know they were there because I saw them with my own eyes :0) , but not on the “official list”. If you know of other schools, feel free to copy & paste and add them to the list.

Also, I listed the schools exactly as they were listed . . . some parenthetically listed with questions marks if I was unsure.

Someone can chime in regarding Juilliard . . . my D didn’t audition for them in Chicago, but I know they were there . . . maybe at a different hotel??

Someone posted that there are schools in Chicago at the same time as Unifieds but not on the official unified list. Can someone tell me where to find that list?

jeffandann - That is the list posted by kksmom5. For example, Coastal Carolina and Texas State are NOT Unifieds schools, but they go to Chicago during Unifieds and hold their own auditions.

jeff- you can always go to the college you are interested in and see if they will be at Unifieds at the same time for their auditions. I’m not sure that there’s a list. Also, there are 4 schools that are part of the Conservatory programs that are at Unifieds at the same time but not part of Unifieds- Carnegie Mellon, Rutgers, Purchase, and maybe North Carolina School of the Arts.

jeffandann, many schools conduct regional auditions, and those that do will often hold them to coincide with the Unifieds in New York and Chicago. For example, Tisch holds regional auditions, in addition to the many dates in NYC, in the following cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, L.A., Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, L.A.

The best route is to contact the schools on your list and inquire as to regional offerings.

The list above is missing Rider as I know they were at Chicago.
Not sure that FSU = Florida State as I am pretty sure Florida State does not come to any of the unifieds.

Yes, there was no list of schools at/near Chicago Unifieds except for the few schools named on the official Website. You have to check school by school yourself. The Palmer House did give out a list at the concierge desk identifying the schools auditioning inside the hotel and their room numbers, but I didn’t keep mine. Maybe that is what kksmom5 used. My friend auditioned for Florida State and as I recall, they only have on campus auditions because she flew down there a few days before Chicago Unifieds and then joined my friends and I, so I do not think FSU was in Chicago.

Here were some off-campus schools/sites auditioning in Chicago at the same time as Unifieds from my list last spring.

NYU Tisch - Hotel Allegro
Juilliard - Hyatt Regency
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland - Silversmith Hotel
Boston University - Hyatt Regency

I am pretty sure there were a few more UK schools at The Palmer House, too, but I don’t recall what they were…just remember the large signs advertising their programs.

There a several reasons for attending Chicago over the other choices. The main one is there are more days to audition (officially it said three days, M - W, but there were schools starting Sunday evening and even a few schools with slots on Thursday morning). Also, I have heard it is a lot more organized and runs more smoothly than the other locations. Some of the international schools only to Chicago or NY & Chicago, so it is best to make a list of the schools you plan to audition for and check each individual site to plan your audition strategy and which location/date is best.

I think you are correct…FSU does not do Unifieds. Also, parents, bear in mind that many more schools are doing pre-screens this year so your student will need to jump that hurdle before scheduling auditions anywhere. One other item to note, some schools wait to see all potentials prior to selections and others select after each audition date. This is important because for example, LA Unifieds, is very late in the game which means if you have all your eggs in that basket and a school has already selected its quota, there may not be a spot for your student, however gifted. Point Park was a perfect example of this sort of thing as you can read in other posts. Complete the college applications and BFA applications as early as possible; it will allow you more flexibility all around.

FSU was not part of unifieds last year. They auditioned on 6 days over three weekends last year and have not yet posted audition schedule for next year to my knowledge. I suspect that it will not change drastically for 2012.

Agree with MrsDrz, get apps and materials for all schools ready early because audition spots fill up and if operating on a limited budget and with lots of HS performance conflicts, you don’t want to miss out on opportunities. Each school is a bit different on “how to sign up” for audition, suggest adding that column to your spreadsheets.

^^^had that column : ) Among many others!!! Someday I will write a book.

As luvzthe8r suggested, the list of schools is the one distributed by The Palmer. Of course it goes without saying that schools and locations could change for this coming year, but thought it would be helpful to have an idea of who attended last year . . . maybe there are some gems below that someone hasn’t considered.

(* indicate programs that were not on the Palmer list)

FSU does not go to Unifieds for the BFA in MT degree; however, the BM in MT auditions for FSU are held in NYC. How’s that for adding to the confusion? (“Normal” people who are sending their children to college for things like environmental studies think I am crazy for even having one spreadsheet, let alone 3. If they only knew how complicated this was!)

Don’t mean to hijack the thread and make it about Florida State University, but in 1/2012 S #1 auditioned on campus at FSU (not in NY) for the BM in MT 10 minutes before S #2 auditioned for the BFA MT. Moral of the story, as Monkey13 intimated, this process is incredibly convoluted and varies significantly among the schools. And, on top of that, the rules change from year to year. (i.e. new prescreening requiremens for certain programs). Call the schools and ask. In our experience, most of the representatives on the other end of the phone are very pleasant, helpful and are used to questions from clueless parents like me. Can’t wait to read your book, MrsDrz!

monkey13 Ha Ha! Yes, we had many spreadsheet iterations…colleges themselves, audition reqs, essay prompts, LOR writers, you name it! The first one was about 4ft x2ft in 8 pt font when printed! I saved them and I share with the newbies in my area.

Does anyone have an expanded list for Los Angeles? Living out here you would think I would have some info, but I don’t have a clue. Los Angeles is so strange when it comes to theatre, I just don’t get it, maybe we’re not sophisticated enough. :)

And what about NY’s expanded list? I understand that last year was the first time it was held at Pearl Studios in NYC. I know that Chicago is better as far as number of schools and days, however, my D is interested in Pace and they do not go to Unifieds. They are having auditions the same weekend as NY Unifieds, so I thought we would see what schools are there that we can catch while in NYC.

Many thanks!
