How many schools did you apply to?

Applied to 13. Got into 2, waitlisted at 1, deferred then rejected from 1, waiting on 9. Will probably get into 4 of the 9 since the rest are Ivies, and I applied to them just to see if I could get in. Maybe I will, but I gotta stay realistic. Guys, good luck with all of your college futures and whatnot! ^_^

I applied to four schools. One on a whim because I got a free app, two relatively unknown midwestern schools that have engineering programs, and Purdue. I saw no point in applying to schools that I was unsure that I could be happy there. I kind of wish I applied someplace more elite for kicks and giggles, but I didn’t.

I feel like 4-7 is the magic number for school to apply to and anything over 10 would be insane, but that’s just me.

I applied to 9. Rejected by 1, Accepted to 4, still waiting on 4.

I applied to 12 schools total - 4 UC’s (accepted at 3, still waiting for Berkeley) and 8 privates (waitlisted at WashU, waiting for seven others). Applied to 3 Ivy’s.

If you want to apply to 15+ schools, that’s fine, do what you want to do… But what’s the point? Do you guys who applied to a crazy amount of colleges have a true interest in all of them?

This is true.

ilikeUW: basically, I’m very indecisive. Do I want urban or rural? I don’t know. Big or small school? I guess I could be happy at either. University or LAC? Each has its advantages, and its disadvantages. I truly would be happy to go to ANY of the 19 schools to which I applied, and since the whole process is a crapshoot I figured I had a better shot at the really elite schools if I applied to a bunch of the appealing ones. (I did not apply to all the Ivies or anything like that though–I’m not a prestige whore. Well, maybe a bit…) In short, yes, I have a true interest in all the schools to which I applied.

“Do you guys who applied to a crazy amount of colleges have a true interest in all of them?”

^^^^^^

Good question, and maybe the correct question is: What was so different about so many schools that you chose to apply to them all? Was it a hopeful ‘scattershot’ approach to a certain name/prestige level, or a true enough difference among them all?

For my S it was 1 stretch, 2 safeties (OOS urban and in-state rural), and of the rest that caught his (admittedly changing) interest, 1 western, 1 Eastern, and 1 small LAC with engineering. There were just enough differences among them, and we visited 5 of the 6 - and honestly, his interest changed a bit because of those visits.

Looking back, I think he is seriously down to 3 now, and it’s just a question of “to $$$ or not to $$$”.

Did folks who applied to a lot of schools have much to distinguish them?

I applied to 17. 7 UCs, 1 other public (UW) and 9 Privates

Honestly I could have applied to less because I’m not even interested in some of them (mainly my safeties) but I was really unsure what my range was so I just had a wide variety. My GPA is below average but my test scores are pretty high for all my schools so it wasn’t like I could predict whether or not I would get in. I remember even being concerned I applied to too little safeties.

So far I have 2 rejections, 1 waitlist and 5 acceptances. Still waiting from my top choice though :/

i applied to 11. 2 safety schools, 6 reaches (4 ivies), and 3 matches. my original was 8 but i added 2 UCs and a top 10 on a whim…

accepted to 4 so far

 • 1 safety
 • 2 UCs (Irvine and Merced)
 • 1 top 10

i’m waiting on the rest. I haven’t been rejected or waitlisted yet, and i got a likely letter from dartmouth.

i suggest applying to 9 schools: 3 safety, 3 matches, and 3 reaches

3.

Just right? I balked at the price tag for most of my apps (>$50 a pop), so I went strategic. I was only going to apply to my tops by EA/ED– MIT, Emerson, NYU– and then apply to the other 10 safeties/within ranges (I couldn’t see myself at any of them, realistically… well, maybe WNEC) if I wasn’t accepted into any of those. Then I had a couple conversations back and forth with my Emerson admissions rep. He had said something so inexplicably ■■■■■■■■ and ignorant in my first interview that, regardless of the next two or three times I had relatively intelligent conversations with him or how much I loved Boston and Emerson’s Media Studies program, I literally could not stomach filling out their application anymore. Then, I read over Adelphi on the day before their EA deadline, found out they had both an honors and an accelerated law program, and filled out the application.
Paid $175 (as opposed to the literally thousands that a couple people I know who applied to around 24 schools would have paid) for apps and was accepted to 2. & I’m decidedly happy with my two :)

13
2 safety
5 match
6 reach

To be fair, it wasn’t that bad. Except for the cost. >_<

Accepted for state school, rejected from 2 so far (but these were to be expected, super reach ha)

I applied to 10

1 ivy, 5 “top” LACs (as in, they’re in that section on CC), 2 less selective LACs, 1 public safety.

My stats were all at the 75th+ percentile but my ECs are not super impressive and I have no major awards so I figured I should play the field with selective schools. Plus I want to be able to compare FA. Plus, three apps were free so I wasn’t paying all that much more than the average IB kid at my school.

In retrospect, though, I shouldn’t have applied to one of the top LACs and one of the lower ones, because I’ve realized both of them don’t suit me

I’ve been accepted/likelied to 5: the safety, the lower LACs, and 2 of the top LACs. No rejections yet and I can totally tell it’s stroking my ego too much - I’m not mentally prepared for any rejections, haha.

I feel the same way, but at some point I “decided” I wanted medium-sized urban and ended up applying to 10 schools. I regret making the decision that early and not applying to a few more reach schools, especially those that didn’t make the cut once I decided on a criteria. At some point I realized that I wan’t even interested in attending half the schools on my list, and this, coupled with the fact that I applied to too few reach schools (4), kept me up at night for weeks. I’m a bit more relaxed now that I’ve gotten into one of my top choices, but I still wish that’s I’d applied to 6-10 reaches and maybe 2 matches and 2 safeties. I probably can’t even afford most of the matches/safeties I applied to anyway, so if I hadn’t gotten into any reaches (with better financial aid) I’d only have one saftey to choose from.

4

Though I knew where I wanted to go so I didn’t need to hedge my bets.

Wow…I only applied to 3. I knew where I really wanted to go, but I applied to two others that I also liked.

Applied to 11.
7 reaches
3 matches (including a reachy match)
2 safeties (one reachy safety and one have have have to get in)

Accepted at 3 including a reach, a reachy match, and the reachy safety. The last safety is full funding (even though I don’t find out til May ish, and by then I won’t care if I get in somewhere better), but the other safety is no funding at all! Reach and reachy match are decently funded, though.
