Right now I'm floating between 10-12, I think I might pare it down to 8-10..but what's usually consider normal in terms of the numbers of school one is applying to?

Most students planning on going to college apply to one or two. Only those willing to swim in the more selective pool apply to 5+

Really? 1 or 2? I’m grumbling over a cap of 8. I don’t get it, if i’m ready to do the work to apply to 10 and I really do like each one of them, and can’t decide between a few, whats the biggie :(.

If you’re aiming Ivyish, I think people usually apply 6-12

Most people I know are applying to 1 or 2. I’m pretty sure my brother applied to only 2. I’m applying to 7, which I thought was normal. CC has warped me, lol.

lol I so derperately want just one or two more slots to apply to… but my school won’t budge.

Statistics aside, I think you should apply to 4-8 schools; only schools you KNOW you’d be happy at. Include one sure safety school. The rest are all reaches, in my opinion (applying to “match” schools is not really a guarantee of acceptance in this competitive age).

Another point - all Ivies are not the same. Those who apply to all eight want the prestige and don’t understand how the schools differ (i.e. check out the curriculums of Columbia v. Brown); also, there are equally good schools not in the League (which is, after all, an athletic league!).

Applying to more schools than with this strategy just gives you more work, annoys your GC and teachers, and costs your parents more money. Just my two cents as a parent of four kids, two at their first choice schools, and the third applying now.

i’m applying to 7

optimally, it would be 5 or 6

wow…i’m applying to 23! guess i should probably cut down before i spread myself too thin.

23! now I don’t feel that bad about wanting to apply to 10 Kidding, if you can see yourself at those 23, know their distinct personalities… then… you still may want to cut down a few :p

Hahaha
I guess once January 1 comes, I’ll decide to knock a few down, but for now, 23’s good :)

I’m on the low end for CC; I’m only applying to four. I really am a firm believer in the importance of fit over prestige, so that guided me quite a bit in my search. Granted, I had other parameters that helped me pick my four.

Most of my friends are applying to 6-8 schools; I guess that’s a pretty good average.

It partly depends on the makeup of your list and the strength of your application in the pool.
It’s nice to get an early acceptance to a safety school, then you can trim the list accordingly.

Thanks all! Looks like there’s more work for me to do to try to trim the list…although I’d be happy at my first choice school, AND its rolling AND it’s not hard to get in, so maybe I should just apply to less than 5!

5 but i was really only considering 3

It’s always great to find a school like that. I was RELIEVED when I found a school that I love, has the program I want, and is basically a safety :)

You guys’ schools limit your number of apps? Cheese. I could apply to 25 colleges if I wanted to at my school. Though I don’t want to.

Anyways, I’m applying to two early. If I get in to at least one, then I’ll apply to Harvard, Princeton, and a few more ivies / colleges good with my major (which basically means all the ivies). If I don’t, I’ll have to apply to safeties. Ugh. I really want to get in early.

It runs the gamut. I would say most of my friends are applying to between 1-5. The “high achievers” in my school are applying to anywhere from 6-13. I’m applying to 10.
