How many schools do you usually apply to?

I’m planning to apply to 10, and that’s the minimum -__-

Around 10.

6 Reaches, 2 Matches, and 2 Safeties.

Although some of my reaches are probably high matches.

If I claimed any of my reaches were high-matches, I would be immediately accused of being arrogant/cocky/disillusioned etc.

Thus the 12 Reach/2 Match/1 Safety

“Do anyone else’s schools impose limits on how many schools you can apply to? Ours says we can only apply to 8 US schools, and there are limits for other countries too :
It would be nice to be allowed to apply to a few more reaches…”

They tell you that you can only apply to 8? That’s really lame.

Our school charged for every application. The first one was free but then you had to pay for every other sent transcript. People still apply to 15 and 20 schools though.

@J13: but didn’t you get a 2400? you should be fine…

^ Take a look at HYPS RD Decisions. A 2400 doesn’t guarantee anything lol.

^^^^ Hmm maybe so. Are you implying I am?

^^And I wouldn’t say a 2400 guarantees anything. Although it is definitely a strong aspect of the his application. (And you basically reiterated what I said lol)

8 reaches, 2 matches, and 2 safeties.

Wow, so many people are applying to so many reach schools… this could be the culprit for the declining acceptance rates at HYPS and the like.

^ or the fact that they now only need 2 SAT II, opening their applicant pool even more. Harvard just wants a sub 6% acceptance rate = p.

^^Lol, but not everyone’s reaches are HYPSM. Although true that lots people just apply for the “hell of it”.

After seeing the quality of applicants declined every year, people who want to go to HYPS type schools go into college applications expecting very little acceptances.

Indeed lol, one prime example of this being myself. But I’m not even applying to that many reach schools (2 of them, in fact). Don’t worry; you won’t be competing against me unless you’re vying for a spot at either Harvard or Columbia! Not that I have much to offer in terms of competition anyways… :P

What other schools have acceptance rates as low as HYPSM and the Ivies?

MIT, CalTech (it’s acceptance rate is deceptively high due to the self-selecting nature of it’s applicants), UChicago (definitely after this year), Duke and most of the other schools in the Top 20 of USWNR’s College Rankings List. Obviously HYPS tend to have the lowest, with the acceptances rates gradually getting higher as you go down the list but still abysmally low overall.

Schools in the top 20 like CalTech, Duke, UChicago, WashU, Northwestern, all have acceptance rates that are pretty comparable to Ivies… maybe a little bit higher in past years, but after this year, you can pretty much guarantee some of their rates will hover around the < 20% range.

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned LACs yet. Amherst, Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Swarthmore, etc. All well under 20%.

Although I don’t see why this matters.

Anyone here applied to Harvey Mudd? I think it’s part of the Claremont McKenna system of schools, and they’re hard to get into.

^^I’ll probably apply to LACs.

Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Pomona, and Harvey Mudd are all really competitive LACs that have acceptances well under 20%. And the fact that they’re more self-selecting makes it tougher. I’ve actually heard of people getting in to Ivies but not the very top LACs.
