I'm feeling a little curious, so just like the topic says, how many schools are normal to apply to as a transfer? How many schools did you/are you applying to? Are you/did you applying to transfer out a community college or a 4 year college?

I applied to 4 schools. I think as a transfer student you generally have an idea of what kind of school you’re looking for. You also know what colleges look for regarding admissions so, you don’t need to apply to 100 of them hoping someone accepts you.

Out of the 4 I applied to I’ve been accepted to 3 and I’m still waiting on one.

It depends on how badly you want to leave. If you are OK with your current school, you could just apply to those reachy schools you really want to go to. If you are really intent on leaving, you will probably want to apply to a few safety/match schools as well.

Personally I’ll be applying to at least half a dozen schools. I’m a CC student so I know I don’t necessarily have any “target” schools I can count on. The mores schools the better, now it’s just a matter of being able to stomach writing multiple essay supplements.

eLynn07, were you transferring out of a community college or 4 year?

entomom, I’m quite intent on leaving, but I’m going to a 4 year school now. I wonder if it might look bad to apply to around 4 or 5 schools?

Look bad to who? Schools can’t see where you applying unless you voluntarily list them.

I’m transferring from a four year school. I’ve taken classes at a community college, maybe 3 over the summer the past 2 years but most of my credits come from a 4 year.

I read from somewhere (here, I think) that they can see all the schools you apply to based on your financial aid forms?
Thanks, eLynn07! Glad someone’s in the same boat as me.

To be honest, I didn’t apply into any “academically superior” schools, so I might not be the best person to get advice from if you’re trying to transfer into Yale. However,I do know that I was not once questioned about the schools I applied to. In fact, I haven’t applied for financial aid through the universities because I’m an OOS student. I’m not offered too many scholarships through the schools. Your FAFSA is only used to determine your aid need, not your admissions. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Only 1 school.

This was my dream from high school, where I Ed’d, got deferred, then waitlisted.

But I really like my current school and it has a guaranteed transfer program with my dream school where I can go after 3 years and get a degree from both, so I don’t really care if I don’t get in.

Honestly, might not even go this year even if I get in.

I have a good reason for transferring, but its nothing I can’t do with the guaranteed transfer program, so its not too big a deal for me.

In general, schools don’t care how many other applications you have out. I would construct your list more on the basis of fit, funds and likelihood of acceptance.

Coming from a CCC - I applied to 6 schools - UCB, UCSD, UCLA, UCSB, USC, and Pepperdine.
I almost applied at the American University of Paris, but I knew that I was likely to get into at least 2 of the 6 that I applied to so I decided against it.

Hopefully I get into all 6! But I’m pretty sure I’m not getting into UCLA’s Comms, so 5 would be nice :)

I applied to 7 schools. 2 reach schools with great FA, 3 great but not as good as the first two schools with questionable FA, and 2 instate safeties with tuition low enough that FA doesn’t matter too much. For me it’s all about the Financial Aid. I can only go where I get great FA. I applied to the middle 3 just in case I get some kind of unusually good FA package.

I’m applying from a CC. I really don’t think schools care how many places you apply. Whether you are from a 4yr or a CC I just don’t think they care.

I agree with entomom, apply to schools you realistically see yourself getting into.

From my own experience, I applied to only 3 schools (Baylor, OSU-Columbus & Temple). Temple was my safety and Baylor was the main school I wanted to get into. I was accepted to Baylor, OSU-Columbus and Temple did not process my application yet but am pretty sure I would get in.

I know I want to be in Chicago and I know I want to leave this school.

So I’m applying to UChicago, Northwestern, DePaul, and Loyola.
