How many schools should you ideally apply to?

Hi, I'm going to be a senior next year and was wondering how many schools is considered too many.

My list:
Stanford
USC
UCLA
UT
Northwestern
Cornell
UPenn
UMich
Rice
Harvard
Duke

Does applying to more mean significantly more work, or is it well worth it to do so?

I plan to apply to 10-13 universities, though list may get smaller… So far I started my applications for George Washington University and University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. I’m likely to finish my online work for University of Minnesota- Twin Cities since they do not ask for counsler info, nor scores etc… since scores will have to be mailed, while I also plan to retake ACT in September or SAT in October.

i applied to 10 (including my safeties) and looking back i didnt really need that many… you really shouldnt bother with that many reaches unless you feel like you have a solid chance and even then its all a crapshoot.

I’m applying to 6. I would only apply to 2 schools if I could. I’m certain I can get into my state flagship as I’m well over the requirements. The other is a reach.

I’m only going to apply to 4 or 5.

6 is the ideal number (2 reaches, 2 matches, and 2 safeties)

If you are only applying to 5 or 6 or 7 you might want to mention that in your application. Generally most student at DD Prep school are applying to at least 15.

15 - yikes! In some ways the Common App has created a monster for schools.

This is the standard advice that you will often hear, but I don’t agree with this for a student who wants to go to highly selective schools. It’s just too risky to apply to only two reaches. So I would say, 2 safeties, 2 matches, and then 5-7 reaches, espeically if you are talking about reaches like those of the OP (who doesn’t appear to have enough safeties, unless he’s from Texas).

Personally, I think more than 15 is too many, and 10-15 is in the “not too many but not average” pile. I applied to 5 and I think, for me, that was enough at the time. I’m more worried about the fact that you don’t have any safeties on that list. Possibly some are matches (maybe Rice, UT, and UCLA), but if you are OOS for UCLA and UT then those aren’t really ‘matches’…

It also depends on your profile and where you’re applying. Students who really want to go to a top school should apply to more, of course. Most of my schools were safeties and low matches, so I didn’t really need to apply to too many. I think if I had set my sights higher, on the top schools, I likely would’ve applied to 8-11 schools.

I think you should apply to as many as you can without affecting the quality of your applications. Most schools ask for similar stuff anyway. It’s fun, and you’ll never get the same chance to apply again.

Berkeley included

I always say 2 safeties, 3 matches, and as many reaches as you have the time/money to apply to.

This is assuming that the person in question, like the OP, is looking at highly selective schools.

So get your match and safety apps done early and then buckle down on those reaches. Perfect the applications. Working as hard as possible for a few months is worth it if you end up at Harvard or Penn, isn’t it?

and U of Wash. lol

I applied to 12. It was definitely nice to have the feeling that I would atleast get into my 3 safety schools. Don’t let anyone tell you you are applying to too many. In the end it is all about your comfort level and feeling like you would go to any of the schools you applied to.

i applied to 13 total. if you set deadlines and work hard and don’t procrastinate, you should be able to pull it off. :)

Applications are so expensive, though. I wish I had the $$$ to apply to a dozen schools.

As long as you have a good fit safety school and you’re willing to pay all the application fees and fill the applications out, it doesn’t matter.

I wish I could apply to 15- then 5 safties, 5 matches,5 reaches. But I don’t know what my stats are really going to look like so i hope I can get off on applying to less.
