How many schools to apply to

Like how many schools does the averqage CCer apply to. Like my GC said for us to go with like 6 but some of yall say 12+. Where should I limit my options?
I was thinking 6-7

2nd Part. Do Yall who do like 12+ applications pay like 700 dollars or more on this stuff?

I applied to one. EA.

Right now (as a junior) I'm considering about 8 or 9.

But Columbia is my top choice, and I'll apply there ED.. So, hopefully I'll only have to apply to one, but that's wishful thinking.

if you apply online then there is no application fee :) so I'm planning to apply to 13 or 14

I applied to 15 very easily. and yes i spent like $1,000 but its $1,000 in prep for $200,000.

I'm applying ED too, but still, better to start now on all of the apps so you don't get overwhelmed . . .

How much is the paper application fee, 40 bucks? Don't you still have to mail the other stuff, even if you apply online? That costs money too

You really only need to apply to about 8-9 colleges. 2-3 safeties, 2-3 matches, and 2-3 reaches. Spend the most time picking out safeties and the least on reaches. Fewer colleges than 6-8 and you run the risk of rejection or financial aid issues. More colleges than 8-10 and you run the risk of not fully researching them or not going the extra mile on the applications. Remember, you can only attend one. ;)

I prefer to think of it in terms of shooting. People with rifles are those who have sensibly and carefully thought out their choices and apply to a reasonable number. Other people prefer the shotgun method of shooting applications everywhere in the hopes of getting in somewhere. This is incredibly lazy, and it is resulting in an increasing use of the waitlist.

nah you just fill out the application out online, then you have your school send out the transcript

so you don't pay anything :)

as for the essay, I think you send that online with the application

and the paper fee depends on the college, it could be up to $100

kemet gives sage advice. If you play your cards right and make a good college list, you shouldn't have to apply to more than 8 schools.

thanks for clarification :)
recommendations too, school pays for that?

no problem :) and actually I'm not to sure about recommendations, I think you have the teacher whose writing it mail it out for you...

you might wanna ask your guidance counselor about that :)

I applied to four: three matches and a safety.

i'm applying to 8-9 schools + a bunch of uc's. uc= one app.

To whomever said that you don't pay an application fee for an online app, your sadly mistaken.

Some schools may waive the application fee, but most schools still require an application fee. I had to pay one as well as all of my friends who applied online to schools.

I myself applied to 4 schools. Many schools will waive their fees if you apply online but the majority of highly selective schools do not waive their fees unless you qualify for a fee waiver. Also do not forget about sending your SAT scores that will add on some more money.

i applied to 10 schools and yes, the costs from application fees, postage, and sending ACT/SAT scores did add up, but all of my safeties waived my fees and had these "fast track" applications (no essays, recs, fees, =automatic acceptance and merit award), surprisingly, northwestern decided to waive my fee w/o a request, i paid for the others, you should also provide the already addressed/postmarked envelopes for your teachers, be sure to have an euqal number of safeties/matches/reaches and the number you apply to depends on your interest in the school as well as your need to compare fin. aide

I did all of my apps online and payed for all except the two that waived the fee.

I'm applying to one school ED.

i am applying to 20. the uc's count as one.

Im applying to 17, because its my favorite number. I'll only be paying for a few of these, since Im going to get some fee waivers
