Do you guys recommend taking four science courses in high school or do you think three will be fine (for getting into UC’s)? I’ve already taken Physics (Honors), Chemistry (Honors), and Biology, and I’m trying to decide whether or not to take another science like AP Physics or Marine Bio at my local CC.
My major doesn’t have to do with science if that makes any difference (Film).

It always looks GREAT if you take four not matter what major, or UC. If you are going for the higher UCs, definitely take one in my opinion. I never miss an opportunity to make my transcript look better.

Yup, max out on everything! The whole stereotypical idea of seniors with 4 periods isn't gonna cut it for the top universities. Classes you take in high school should not have a focus on your major, especially if it means that you'll have free periods. It's to show that you're well rounded and able to handle heavy loads.

Also, I think you should have taken AP level courses for your sciences... I mean.. if you're taking honors already, you should have taken the rest of the leap.

Heh, my school won't let me sign up for AP sciences unless I've already taken the honors/college prep version of it. It's kind of stupid, especially since they don't offer honors bio and I was forced to take college prep this year :/

I took everything I could, about 8 total science classes. But that's because I'll be majoring in the sciences. UC's like to see students take all the classes they can, and maybe some that they have to go out of their way for. Thankfully, I enjoyed most of the science classes I took.

DrewCA, your school is pretty lame.. if you have to take the honors level before AP, there's no way to take AP for all 3 lab sciences unless you double up... Here, you just need to pass a summer prep class to get into AP Chemistry... after that.. you're automatically in all AP level sciences.. unless you don't get A's or B's.

my school is like DrewCA's..you have to take honors before AP, and for physics there aren't any honors or AP classes at all..also, you have to test to get into each honors science class, and for admission to each AP class, they review your performance in honors..so its not automatic. i think colleges do take into consideration the amount of honors/AP's your school offers and the fact that some schools require you to take honors before AP. In DrewCA's case, its not going to hurt him that he couldnt take AP for all 3 lab sciences. you should def. take all 4 years of science though

for my school its only honors chem before ap chem

but senior year its wide open ... if u've taken honors chem jr. year u can take Ap chem senior year. AP bio and Ap physics are open even if u havent taken them previously.

haha i only took bio, chem honors, physics honors. and i got into ucsb, uci from out of state. and my major has to do with science (chem engineering), so i dont think you should be too worrieddddddd. but yea the more the merrier

well im not sayin that 4 years of science is absolutely necessary...if you feel that you want to take a year off of science, then by all means, relax! you deserve it. i personally got into UCSD engineering and UCD engineering with only bio, honors chem, and physics..but if i could go back in time, i would've taken a 4th science senior year. it only helps your transcript. who knows, maybe i would've gotten into UCLA, haha.
