How MANY seats are going to be cut? This will affect your admissions as well!

Does anyone know how many seats are going to be cut? They said 500 hundred for last year and 500 hundred for this year but last year they cut almost 750, so what about this year?

anyone?..

There’s a budget site that I looked at (there’s a link on the TritonLink homepage before you sign in), and I didn’t see anything about reducing the number of admitted students, at least for this year. In the future, who knows, but I think (and hope) all of the Fall 09 admits are safe. Most of the cost cuts are stuff like reducing energy use, furloughs for university staff, and cutting administrative costs.

Thanks… its possible i guess that point system will stay the same then (or close to it anyways)

It will most likely remain the same, but the cutoff will possibly be higher.

Whether it seems like there is to be another cutoff, the point system must be higher for this year’s applicants. With budget cut and all, 2010 will most likely see a reduced amount of applicant acceptances due to the budget cut, most likely for the top three UCs, UCB, UCLA and UCSD.

… Its higher every year it rarely is ever the same it always has to rise but for some reason i don’t think it will raise more than 50 points…

Naw, the 2009 cutoff will be the highest ever. This year should be easier to people to get in guarenteed.

How can you be so sure?

They’re cutting Freshman Admits but upping Transfers so thats something to keep in mind.

One way to think about it is that since more people are worried the economy and their chances of getting in, they might not apply. Which will make it easier! I am just hoping it gets easier or at least stays the same. (-_-)

That is unfounded reasoning (post # 11 above):

– High school graduates understand the premium on college education in the modern age
– Especially in a downturn, there are less work opportunities for high school kids who don’t want to attend college
– There will be greater number of applicants who will apply to the top and middle tier UCs than ever – driven by parents who wish to take advantage of a high quality education offered by the UCs at significantly lower tuition than private schools
– UCs will be watching freshman numbers – perhaps controlling them further in light of all their own budget-cutting, as well as to avoid classroom crowding
– More than ever before, UC admissions this year was stricter in standards and fewer frosh admits. This is likely to continue to set the new template going forward

Thinking otherwise is engaging in wishful, even fanciful, thinking.

^ I was joking…

As I said, I just hope it stays the same or gets easier.

^I think last year was the peak of the baby boomers, and there will be less applying this year.

I don’t think the economy will play as big of a factor as some are suggesting. Yeah there are budget cuts but they need students to help fund the University.

Whatever the numbers are, it’s gonna be harder for Freshman to get in. They cut UC funding, CSU funding AND CC funding. So it’s just going to get more and more crowded on the bottom.

No, it’ll be easier to get in next year. Class of 2009 was the biggest graduating class and the economy is getting better. Also, UCs like UCSD and UC irvine realized they admitted far too little students this year and they actually want more students since UCSD moved all winter admits to fall and UC irvine accepted a very large number of people who appealed since less people than they thought chose to attend UC colleges.
