how many times? ACT and SAT?

Hey Guys,

I am taking the SAT March 10th for the first time. Junior here btw. I will admit I have not done a ton to prepare. I have used my blue book to prepare myself for what the questions are like and get familiar. I took the PSAT in Oct and I think i scored in the 50's which I was disappointed about. Right now I am planning to take SAT 2's in May, ACT in June. Then ACT again in Sept and SAT again in Oct. So only take each test twice and not taking SAT's again until Oct but I still will be staying fresh since I will be preparing for ACT in june.

Basically should I take the SAT 3 times and just only take the ACT once in Sep. Just trying to decide what my best options are. Let me know what you guys think!

Matt

I took SAT once, and ACT twice.. SAT kind of sucked, and so did my first ACT. I went from a 27 to a 31 the second time, though. 31 is good enough for me, even if it "sucks" for some people on CC. Oh, well.

While people say that the SAT should be taken only three times, this is because of College Board's sending policy. They send EVERYTHING. Say you want to send your 800 in IIC, but College Board will also send your 300 in Lit as well, even if you didn't want that one sent.

The ACT however, allows you to send individual scores. Say you want to send that 35 you got in February, and you can ignore that 15 you got in December.

If money is not a problem, take the ACT as many times as you can (June Sept, Oct, Dec). You're fine with the SAT 3 times.

I think I decided I will do the SAT 3 times. I am taking SAT 2's in May. So I was thinking of taking SAT in June and ACT in June. Do you guys think its bad taking the tests two weeks in a row? Its not like your taking them the same day or anything. Then I would SAT again in OCT and ACT in Sep.

Matt

anyone...? ?

I heard that only 1 in 8 students take the SAT three times, but a lot of people seem to be taking it 3 times.

Is it bad to take it more than twice?

No... people take it alot on CC because most of us get above 2000s and we try to get perfect super scores.

SAT - maximum of 3.

ACT - as many as you want / can.

Just understand that there is usually a leveling off point. Most people can continue to take these tests, but will earn about the same score each time after a certain point.

As far as the colleges' policies go, this really isn't worth worrying about. A couple months ago, I started gathering questions and replies from CC threads about the retake issue, and sent the quotations along in emails to the admission offices of colleges that make up the Exploring College Options consortium

http://exploringcollegeoptions.org/

I told the admission officers that I was sending along the student questions and the mutually contradictory online answers so that they could see what people are saying about the issue, and so that I could ask the question in person at the Exploring College Options meeting in my town (Thursday 10 May 2007 in Bloomington, Minnesota) so that I would be sure what to tell parents and students who ask me about this.

Harvard's admission officer at that meeting clearly said not to worry about admission test retakes.

The 2006-2007 Official Register of Harvard University, a publication of the admission office, says, "You may take tests more than once; we consider only your highest scores." All comparable colleges have similar policies, so this isn't an issue to worry about.
