I took my first SAT in December and scored a 1970. I really want to be in the 2000s range. I have signed up for the March SAT but I haven't studied as much as I probably need to. Will it be okay to take the SAT three time? Will that look bad to college

You only need to send your best test score. Don’t automatically send the scores, wait and send only the best one. There are some schools that require all be sent, mostly ivies, so check the requirements for where you are interested. Plus, as long as they are increasing with each test there is no negative.

Only take the test if you know you can improve your score significantly.

Each attempt should be treated as your last one. Just get it prepared thoroughly before the test. If the score does not match your expectation, then take it again. There is no absolute limit to it, however, it is not likely to improve after the second or third attempt according to statistics. It used to be a limit of 2 of 3 for certain schools, but that is no longer the case since the introduction of score choice.
