I am a junior in high school and was wondering if it matters if I take the SAT many times. Do colleges care if I take it like ten times and get 2400 on the tenth try or is it better to just go all out and get 2400 first time? If they don't care than I want to take it just to see where I am at.

It's a myth that taking the SAT more than three times will hurt you. While there might be one or two colleges in the country who may secretly frown upon taking the SAT 4 or 5 times, if that 4th or 5th testing will significantly (by more than 50 points total) increase your score, I say go for it. Taking the test ten times, however, might be construed as excessive by many people.

Yeah, I agree Godot. As long as your score improves significantly then go for it but don't overdo it(Max 4 times as I believe your score isn't going to improve much after that and if it does it just shows that you weren't trying hard enough earlier).

Well the reason why I asked was because I was thinking about just taking it once to see where I am at; before I take classes and study hardcore. I am going to start classes beginning of feb. and than take the SAT beginning of april. I was thinking about taking the sat in jan just to see where I am at. I guess I will just wait till april unless you guys think I should take it in jan.

I would not suggest taking it once to see where you are at..Instead we have a thing called 'practice tests.' Take one or two real practice tests, see where you need the most work on, and go on from there. Do not start taking the test until you are fully prepared. And I'd like to reiterate the fact that taking the SAT more than 3 times WILL hurt your chances of admissions @ top notch universities.

Someone at my school took it 6 times last year and got into JHU (for Regular Decision) and was Z-listed at Harvard (accepted but required to defer for a year).
