I know that in general it is not recomended to take the SAT more than 3 times. But do schools look down on it if a student does take it 3 times? In other words, is taking it 3 times stretching it?

From what I've recollected some schools see it as a stretch some others don't. Whatever you do stop at 3.

Three times is fine. More is fine, too, unless you have better things to do with your time. The colleges maintain that they don't care how many times you take it.

well i've always heard that generally after 3 times scores start to go down and that is one of the reasons colleges discourage from taking it more than 3 times

can someone explain the process of "taking the average"
and about the "super score"?

If one takes the SAT I three times, do colleges look at the general pattern (every score) or just at the highest score of each section (is this the same thing as the super score)?

superscore is the best section from each test, no matter what sitting...
ie, if you take it twice

1st SAT: 600 M, 700 WR, 800 CR = 2100
2nd SAT: 800 M, 750 WR, 550 CR = 2100

Superscore=2350 (best sections: 2nd sat's 800 M, 2nd sat's 750 WR, and 1st sat's 800 CR)

taking the average would be just that-taking the average of each section or overall...few schools do that though, you'd have to look up their individual policies
