How many med schools on average are people applying to nowadays...i know its very competitive but is it going to be 10 on average like the undergrad process or is it going to be more or less.

I don't really know. I applied to 7, I have a friend who applied to 17, and I've heard of going as high as 25.

My friend who applied to 17 said that she had to explain in her interviews why she really wanted to go to that school...I don't know if that really helped or not.

I'd imagine that it depends a lot on where you are applying. I'm from the midwest and my top two choices were my home state and the state where I went to undergrad. Both are good programs, Nebraska being #11 in the latest US News rankings, and Kansas being pretty decent. Neither get the number of apps that some schools get though. If you're from a more populous state making admission to your state schools more difficult, then you'll have to apply to more schools naturally. Also if you're applying to many private schools, then you're going to have to apply to more. Because state schools usually weigh in-state residency more highly, there are a lot of people who avoid applying to state schools of which they are not residents because they think they have no chance of getting in (it is a little bit more difficult, depending on which school we're talking about, but not always).
