One of my friends told me to take 3 classes instead of 4 for my first quarter. You're required to take 12 units to be considered a full time student at my CC. Do you think 3 classes would be a good idea for the first quarter? Just to ease into the rush. Thank you and let me know your opinions!

The answer depends on many variables; 1) if you have financial aid, then 12 units may be required; 2) it depends if you are taking classes for which you have good background knowledge and/or if you are taking classes that have a lot of ‘new’ material (for example, are you taking a new foreign language or a math class that is really tough?)… because that will influence time/study groups/possible need for tutoring; 3) do you have to work, too? How many hours of work each week? Each class unit = a minimum of two hours homework OUTside of the class, so 12 units = 36 hours, basically, of ‘work’ a week; 4) are there family obligations along with school and/or are you commuting/spending a lot of time going to/from classes; 5) what other outside obligations do you have each week… so there are lots of variables that go into answering the question.

If you have financial aid, you may have to do the 12 units. Connect with counseling/advising at your school to get help with the answer to your question, and have a great quarter! :)

And one p.s.: friends often give lots of advice to students, and I always tell students that it’s great to have friends, but talk to the experts (counselors/advisors/teachers/administrators) at your school to get the ‘official’ answer to questions if at all possible. They are there to help you succeed in your studies.
