how many units can a freshmen student take in the 2014 fall

I heard that a student is allowed to choose only 3 courses (15 units), is it true. How many units an average freshman student take in his/her first Fall Quarter? thank you in advance for information/advice

You can take up to 19-21 units every quarter, including freshman fall quarter depending on what college you are in. HOWEVER, counselors STRONGLY encourage freshman to take only 3 courses during fall quarter just so that they can transition smoothly. Apparently fall quarter freshman year can be one of the worst quarters for grades because you are not used to college life in general yet. Also, not all courses are 5 units. Many math/science classes are only 4 units, but can be even more difficult than the 5 unit classes.

You can take as many units in any quarter you want (21+), so long as your study list unit petitions are approved. 19 is the regular study list unit max in College of Letters and Science; 21, Engineering. Your New Student Advisor/Orientation Counselor (NSA/OC) will very much encourage you to take only 3 classes Fall Quarter, but once you’re out of orientation you’re free to edit your study list and add more classes.
