So far, I'm in a chemical engineering seminar (1 unit), math 31a (4 units) and chem 20a (4 units).. I"m looking for one more class, but maybe I should be going for two, depending on how many units I should be raking in a quarter?

since you are a first year, do 3 the first quarter, 3 and a lab (chem 20l) the 2nd and 4 in spring and pretty much 4 from that point on if you haven’t passed out from any of the GEs… as for this quarter did you need to take english comp 3? a lot of people do that… if you passed out from that then just pick a GE since you can’t start physics series…

so i’ve taken roughly 4 classes per quarter (excluding my upcoming senior year) in order to graduate in 4 years (major: CSE). that’s about 16-18 units per quarter. I highly suggest you take 4 classes your first quarter if you’re planning on graduating in 4 years

but you have 3 class quarters in the last 2 years… i wish i have done that, i only took 3 a quarter my first year now im stuck with 4 classes a quarter til i graduate =.= well at least im in summer session now and hopefully 2 less classes i have to take next year :D

I recommend this as well so that you have more flexibility later for summer internships and research opportunities.

In my opinion, securing a position (internship, research) during the summer will be very important whether you are interested in pursuing the industry or academia after your B.S. There will only be one summer available for summer school (2 at most if you don’t get anything after your 2nd year). So if you want to get out in 4 years, take as much as you can handle.

Starting with 4 isn’t bad at all, especially since at least one will be a GE/fiat lux. You’ll be rewarded with a more relaxed senior year (look at 3 classes per quarter that MadeInChina is taking during Year 4).

i count seminars as classes since they usually have work in them (essays, quizzes, etc). i think 14 units should be sufficient for your first quarter.
