How many volunteer hours do you have and what is your top reach school that those hours look best for?

Well I don't get where you'd put it on an application.

You can't just put "300 hours." That's vague, and doesn't tell you anything.

Glucose, some scholarship applications specifically ask how many hours you have. It is important to know.

Well then put something like "300 hours tutoring math or helping out my church."

^ that sounds vague also....

Okay then forget it. I was just wondering what the normal amount of hours people who are applying to top schools have.

I only care about volunteer hours for one reason. On some applications, it asks the counselor if the school has a minimum hours requirement and if the student has surpassed that. I want my counselor to be able to write that I surpassed it

i think most people have 200 hrs

Whatever the case may be, I doubt your hours will get you in or keep you out, unless you've volunteered at a pharaceuticals company and helped them develop a drug that cures cancer

I don't think community service counts for that much, to be honest. It seems that everybody has several hundred hours, and colleges don't need to see that you did CS to know that you're a good person.

I agree, I think a job carries alot more weight. A job shows responsibility.

I have about 1000 hours over 3 years, but that comes at the price of having practically no teams or other ECs. So for me, it probably hurts more than it helps.

I do sorta random stuff, anything from volunteering on a sailing program to Habitat for Humanity.

Community service counts for college admissions if you've done something worthwhile. If you write down that you have 300 hours for helping your church, that seems very common and yes, a bit vague. However, if you volunteered teaching young underprivilaged children to read, or worked in the inner city or something, those things catch the attention of colleges. For instance, I taught Hebrew in religious school for a total of 500 hours, while in HS. While this certainly isn't curing cancer, it is specific enough so that colleges can see my skills and that I'm dedicated to something larger than myself. That is the real point to Community Service.

Would tutoring students in history for about 3 hours a week, count as community service or how would I put it on my application?

They certainly would count! @Ilovesoftball44

While true, the person asked the question 8 years ago, and probably figured out how to include in her college app. Please use old threads for information only. Closing.
