How many W's you have? effect chance?

Hello? Currently I have total 7W's w/ 3.73 GPA....
I've heard that UC doesn't care that much of W's but since I have a lots of W's will it hurt my chance?(Cal, UCLA)
Also I just want to know how many W's you guys have! Thanks!

that is a really good question...I think I had 3 of them & I don't know how they looked at that but I still got into Cal ...I'm wondering for someone else I know who is applying soon...he has 3 but one is from this summer semester so I'm wondering if it makes a difference how recent it was...anyone else who can chime in...that would be great...

btw...your GPA is great...so that's a plus

Shouldn't matter too much. The 7 W's could actually help your case if they are generally confined to a temporal span and are the result of extenuating circumstances (i.e. you could write about your academic turn around in your personal statements) A friend of mine did this...

Thx for replying..... it is such a pain when you are working and studying...

I had a smattering of W's and got in everywhere I applied last year (UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCB)

1 or 2 Ws will not keep you out of a top UC, X>3 may need some serious explaining.

but hey, stay hopeful, you never know.

gocheechoo- how many W's u had?

I asked the berkeley admissions rep at de anza how W's played out in the admissions process. He assured me that 2-3 W's were "nothing to lose sleep over". As mentioned, a brief explanation of your working + school situation would be probably be more than enough for admissions.

have any of you even conversed with an admission representative from any UC. W's DO NOT MATTER, THEY ARE CROSSED OUT BY THOSE THAT ARE LOOKING AT YOUR TRANSCRIPT AND DISMISSED. I have 13 and every single UC i have talked to in the last 2 years has said you can have 30, it simply does not matter. college reps at cc's have told me they matter, prof's have told me they matter, however the schools themselves say they do not. I will take their word above all others.

Yeah you'll get in, but do you care about grad school? Because those places certainly pay attention to W's.

that they do. They care about F's as well unlike transfer undergrad at a UC. Up to 4 i believe, if the course has been satisfactorily been retaken, UC admissions will cross those at along with the W's.

Grad school is a whole different story. When applying to these programs, you need a good reason and an explanation in your essays or special appendage that you supply. F's as well need a good reasoning, but for this, some schools will count the units for the F's and retake = screwed, and some only take the retake units in your GPA calculation. This will require some research and calling/emailing to find out each individuals school policy. For example LSAC will count all units, retakes or not, everything is counted. But some schools will recalculate your grade based on their GPA determinations. Luckily i have no desire to go to law school anymore because i would have to have 20 units of 0 added in with my otherwise decent GPA, and those twenty units would pull me down from a 3.5 to a 3.1 = that really sucks. USC for undergrad transfer students also counts both retake and F units for their GPA calculations which is one of the few reasons i did not apply.

I have two W's right now but Im a little worried about the W's at CAL and I want to go to grad school so I am a little concerned about that to.

I had a **** ton and got into Cal, but obviously explained myself in the open-ended q.

having any number of W's on your transcript is detrimental to your chances of admission

everyone else is lying

rawr

andandy- how many W's you had?

lostincode has obviously had zero contact with any UC admissions staff

lol i agree w/ u southpasdena!

God, I must have had 10+ W's numerous F's that I retook for A's and resettled with a 3.5~ gpa. But my essay pwned. I didn't end up going to Cal. I wanted in at UCLA, but got rejected. I'm a liberal arts major, and I know a lot of you are more interested in B.S/Business degrees, but for you kids who think having the prettiest GPA and E.C trumps work experience/a life think again. Thank you comprehensive review. I'm reapplying again this year with the intention of going to Cal, but I'm changing my major at UCLA, if I don't get in at LA (again) I'll probably go to Cal.

Oh, I also got into the other UC's I applied at as well: UCSB, UCI, UCR, UCSC.

interesting, so do W's not appear on your UC transcript? cuz in dat case we shuld all just drop wen we're struggling...
