How many years did it take for you to transfer?

I just want to get a glimpse of the people on here. I am primarily asking this question because I am debating staying another year at my CC. Right now I am about to finish my second year at college. I applied to several UC's as a computer science major and cognitive science, they are UCLA, UCSD UCI and UCSC. Even though I applied as computer science major, I have yet to complete a programming class successfully. I drop a java class because I was doing poorly. I think this was because I failed to take the prerequisite class and I also failed to study. If I decide to transfer, I will also only have two semesters of calculus. If I decide to stay another year, then it will become harder to get accepted to UCSD since computer science will become an impacted major. I am also worried about transferring to my other top choice of school, UCLA. If I get accepted to UCLA, then I want to change my major to Math/economics (NOT impacted) . However I am worried that the Math part will make me flunk out. Should I stay another year at my CC?

I would advise you to stay another year and be better prepared, even if your major might be impacted at UCSD by that time. Computer science majors and STEM majors in general are expected to take about 3 or 4 years to transfer because of the large amount of coursework necessary to transfer.

Just focus on your studies and apply again next year. I think it’s in your best interest to do that.

7
Yes 7.

Stay another year finish as much of those major prereqs as you can.

3 years, my major is CS too…it is not possible to complete all the pre-req in 2 years. especially for UCB & UCLA,!

Two!
Mechanical Engineering major

@Bolandgoo, did you complete the prerequisite for EECS?

2 years. Cognitive Science and Computer Science… one year of calculus… also thinking of switch to math/econ at UCLA if I get in… are you me?

Spent 4 semesters at CC and transferring next fall as computer science majors. I finished pre-reqs for my top choice UCD. Finished calc, linear algebra, 3 programming classes, discrete math and 2 semesters of chemistry. I have a few GE’s as well, but I mostly focused on pre-reqs.

3 years. As a comp. eng major. I started in low level math too! It feels great knowing I’m almost done with math. i had to work a lot more than some of my fellow engineering majors, since most started in trigonometry or precal.

3 years. I changed my major often so that had something to do with it

One

Personally, I hate cc and I want to leave as soon as possible. Even one year feels like too much. I want to enjoy my college experience and be in around intelligent people so that’s my reason. However, it also means that the majors I select at each school are limited bc I need certain prerequisites to be competitive.

However, if I were in your shoes I would stay another year since you have so much going on. If being at cc is not agonizing for you, then stay.

You can transfer within 4 semester as a computer science major if you get placed in the math assassement test straight to calculus, otherwise you’re going to spend 3 years finishing up all the prerequisites

I second what others have told you, spend another year if possible and be better prepared, what matter to the UCs is mostly GPA and finshing up major prerequisites, you will be more competitive if you stayed for another year.

^ I was accepted calculus with my math assessment test at SMC, but still it’s really not possible to finish up in 4 semesters! unless you take +15 a units on each one and pass them all!
I miss physic 23 and 24 at SMC for ucla and ucb.

I’m the same major(s). I’m not a traditional student so I had to start very low in math. I also had a few semesters where I only went part time. This is my fourth year and i’m taking Multivariable Calc right now. At my CC they have multivariable being a prereq for LA and LA being a prereq for DE - so even if you placed into calculus it would take about 5 semesters.

I’ve also taken Intro to Programming with Java, Intermediate Java, C for Engineers, C++, and Python. I think I’m taking Data Structures with Java this Spring. If I could go to a better CC I wouldn’t mind staying another extra year and taking physics and chemistry. I’d probably have a heart attack if I had to deal with my current CC for one more year.

It might hurt you to not have a programming course, even though some of the ones at CC’s don’t directly clear prerequisites at the UCs. If you do decide to transfer I would try to self-learn over the summer because if you’re struggling now it will be even harder at a UC.

3.5 years + 2 semesters in high school.
Also by the end of this semester I will have 140 units → RANK 1 NA

2.5 years

2 years (finishing up this Spring). Had issues getting classes my first 2 semesters (budget cuts, no priority), and then i took 13 during a 6 week summer session, then 20 last fall, and 20 this Spring. I purposely rushed to transfer in 2 years…

2 years

2nd year right now, waiting anxiously for admissions decisions as an EECS major and/or CS engineering. I just took 19+ units/semester to get it done because motivation was high to leave CC ASAP!

5 semesters, 6 years. Just recently came back to finish IGETC this past fall semester. Though, I guess it’s not too bad considering I took a couple years off and I am only just recently 21 years old.
