I always have been told that if you choose to room with someone you know, then you will be stuck on north campus. I want to avoid north campus if at all possible because i know central is where most of the people are. However, a friend recently told me that he called and said you have a better chance of being placed on central or the hill if you choose to live with someone you know. He said something about how if one of you gets placed on north and the other on central then you both get central. I dont know what is true and what is not, could someone please clarify?

On their housing website, it says that most people who choose to room with someone they know gets placed on north campus. Maybe your friend just really likes you and lied so you’ll be his roommate? <3

Has anyone gotten their housing apps yet though?

where does it say that on there, could you give me a link?

From what I’ve seen/heard, if you pick your roommate you’re almost guaranteed north (but I know someone who was placed in Markley)

i’ve said before, i knew kids who requested and got west quad.

i technically requested my roommate, but i got my housing assignment first. markley tried this thing last year where you take a survey and you can look at other surveys similar to yours and i found a roommate that way. if you have that option, i’d do it! that way, you’re not completely blind and not completely comfortable. it worked pretty well in my case haha.

Are people who request roommates usually placed in Bates or Bursley, if they request central = 1st choice and bursley = 2nd choice?

Anyone know? thanks!

Hey guys,

First and foremost rooming at Michigan is completely random! As a current freshman I roomed with a friend I knew and we were placed in Markley. I know a lot of people that requested friends and live on central, and a lot of people that requested friends and live on north. It may seem like more people get placed on north, but it’s really just because there are more freshman rooms there. And even if you are placed on north, it will be okay! A lot of people don’t like it at first, but once they get to Michigan and start meeting everyone they get to like it.

Good luck to all of you!

Yeah, more freshman do get placed on north campus. I went to campus day and I believe one person said that, as of last year, 60% of people who applied with a roommate were placed on north campus.

Ok. I just have had siblings that went there and they loved central and so do i. i would like to be placed there. Is there any way to fill out the housing app to have a better chance of being placed on the hill/central. I know you list that as your first choice and I know that the questions are pretty odd from what ive heard. Just wondering if they might place you in certain places based on how you answer the questions.

There’s no way to better your chances of living on Central unless you decide to join Residential College or a similar program that guarantees you room in a central dorm. Just make sure you submit your housing application on time and hope for the best, since it’s completely random.
