Are there any current UC students or non-UC students familiar with Summer Session financial aid at a UC? What is the typical cost of Summer attendance and for both terms?

I just got my Davis FA offer and it is lack luster. All I received was a full Pell Grant and Cal Grant, amounting to about $17,000. I'm expected to take a subsidized loan of $6000 and contribute $3500.

I want to take the loan and I think I can avoid contributing $3500 by cutting costs. But that only leaves me around $800 a month for 12 months after fees. However, this aid is only suppose to cover non-summer terms, which is why it's getting stretched so thin.

Can I expect the same amount of aid being enrolled in both summer sessions full-time as I'd receive during a normal quarter? They are both ~3 month periods, so I assume it'll be about the same, but I don't know for sure.

sorry you guys, I haven’t taken summer sessions yet so I have no idea. But I am taking it this year and I filed my financial aid for it, so I will let ya’ll know when it comes through and how much it is for.

p.s. my efc for summer is a big fat ZERO so whatever I get from the fed/school will be the maximum anyone can get (too bad there are no summer scholarships =/)

I called the UCLA financial aid office with this question, and I don’t know if this is true for everybody, but in my case she said that the only aid that would apply for summer sessions was the Pell Grant, which, for me, is normally $1,300 a year, but varies based on the amount of units you’re enrolled in. So at 12 units you get all of the money, but I would only be taking 8 units, so I would get 3/4 of it for summer session. Beyond that she said the only other aid I could get was loans.

Again, I don’t know if this is true for everybody, but this is what I was told.

UCcasualty wins! Thanks my warrior of summer financial aid!

The grant info was primarily what I was looking for and I couldn’t find it anywhere else. But I guess most of it will go towards fees, which sucks. It won’t boost my monthly living amount. :(

^ It only covers fees. The Blue and Gold plan is only a fancy way of saying you’re guaranteed enough money in grants or federal loans to cover fees – it’s not an additional grant.

It guarantees with grants and scholarships, no loans.

Nowhere does it say loans. I spoke to a financial aid officer and he reassured me of this. If Pell/Cal don’t pay my fees, UCSD will pick up the tab, loan free. Loans are primarily to cover your expenses beyond fees.

I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but did you guys already enroll in summer courses? I haven’t SIRed yet (still waiting on Cal), so were you able to enroll in courses through URSA once you submitted your SIR?

Do you have to take 12 units in a single summer session (e.g., Session C) to be considered full-time, or can you split those 12 units between Sessions A and C?

It’s 12 units over the entire span of summer. You register for all three sessions at the same time, so the total unit count is the same. For example, 4 units session A, 4 units at B and 4 units at C will give you 12 total summer units.

The reason they offer three sessions is so people can crunch out a sequence in summer if they’re suicidal enough to attempt it. (Chem A, B, C or Physics A, B, C, etc)

Potentially silly question here, but do I need to actually enroll in the summer classes before I apply for financial aid, or can I enroll afterward? Also, at what point does UCLA require payment for the classes?

Well, I am working on two hours of sleep, but I don’t think the link specifically gives an answer. I meant to ask this when I called the financial aid office earlier today, but I guess I’ll call again tomorrow.
