SDSU is your best option. If you don’t like it, Nebraska may be the upper limit of what you can afford. That’s it. Anything above that amount is too much.
Temple doesn’t meet need. They don’t care that they’re unaffordable for you. They will not provide you with sufficient aid.
Why do you think they will cut 10k or do from your already discounted net cost?
@MYOS1634 I explained my situation to them, obviously it’s their ultimate decision so we’ll see.
How is $25k/year doable when your other thread said your parents would have to borrow it? You do realize that most people don’t graduate with over $100k of debt, right? What’s wrong with your CA universities?
@BelknapPoint, how is it possible to get a negative AGI?
@austinmshauri The business programs at the CSUs are ok but the other ones are better obviously. Plus our income is $90k a yr. And you can have a negative AGI by having business losses.
@Lehigh2022 , yes, it is their ultimate decision, but plan to move on. I go to Temple and have friends in your situation who parents are taxpaying residents of Pennsylvania, and cannot get more aid. I think you need to start being a little more realistic. Nobody is going to find you magical money, especially with less than stellar stats. I know that some of the comments seem harsh, but you just don’t seem to be getting it.
If your family has more than $90,000/year of business losses, maybe you should think carefully before borrowing $130,000 for an OOS business program. If you have in state options that will require minimal or no debt, taking out substantial loans isn’t the best business decision you could make.
@jnkam24 Believe me I get it, I am just waiting to see if they give me more aid and if they don’t then its fine. As of right now I am leaning a bit towards UNL because the business school about as good as Temple if not better plus the net costs there will be around 17k a year.
@austinmshauri No, our family income is $90k a year.
If you have a negative $0 AGI (I think the lowest AGI you can have for FAFSA purposes is $0)…then your family annual income for the year is $0…not $90,000.
So…which is it?
If your family has $90,000 in GROSS income…and $90,000 in business losses and expenses…you have $0 for the year.
How would your parents be expected to contribute a dime to your college costs? They don’t have ANY extra income. Or is there something about this that we don’t understand…or know?
@thumper1 $90k GROSS
So…back to my point…if your parent net income is $0…how would they be able to contribute anything towards your college costs?
You would get a $5500 Direct Loan, and about $5000 in Pell Grant money with a $60 EFC. That $10,500 should cover your costs at a community college.
OR if you work now, and have a job…and the net prices quoted above don’t already include this money…go to the Cal states that are affordable.
I just want to share something else with you. Last year I had a friend at Temple who was from the West Coast. She could not afford Temple, but managed to eke out one semester, and did not have the money for spring and had to leave. Not only that, she had to start a Go Fund Me TO GET HOME because she couldn’t afford a plane ticket. All of your choices seem to be very far from home and that’s a huge expense. @Lehigh2022
@thumper1 sorry, $90k NET
based on our income most efc calculators say that our efc is about $15k, but due to the complicated business losses thing, it’s actually $60 on the fafsa
If your family earns more than $90k/year, I wouldn’t expect more aid from Temple. You can write off business losses for your taxes, but I don’t think you can for college.
The IRS allows business deductions for self employed. Some of these are NOT allowed for financial aid purposes.
In your OP, you asked why Temple was asking you to pay so much. Perhaps the business deductions are one reason. That you are OOS is another.
And I still ask…if your parents have a net income of $0, how would they pay for you to attend any college? How?
What, exactly, have your parents told you they can and will pay for your education? That is a figure that you do need.
