How much can an F in a class affect admissions?

I’m currently a high school senior and I’ve been accepted to University of Pittsburgh and Montclair State so far. I’m waiting to hear back from Drexel and NYU. I’m an mostly A’s, some B’s student but I’ve been struggling in pre-calc. I have a 56 in the class as of now (i had an 84 but I completely bombed one of the tests and my grade dropped) and I only have 3 weeks to get that grade up. I’m terrified because not only have I never failed a class, I don’t know what’s going to happen with the colleges I’ve been admitted to regarding a failing grade. I’m going to talk to my teacher about it Monday, but this is stressing me out a lot right now. If I can’t get my grade up, how much will this affect admissions for me?

With an F, your offer might withdrawn, the college may tell you to take some time off (and maybe some community college courses) or they may admit you under severe probationary status. Whatever is the policy of the two schools that have accepted you, your best route is to contact them Monday and tell them, up front, about this possibility and everything you’ve done to avoid the F.

I’ll be frank with you though, I don’t see how an 84 avg drops to a 56 average due to one test. Regardless, you better be ready to give your right arm in your discussion w/your teacher on Monday or the likelihood of your being at UPitt or Montclair in Sept will be nil.

Offer withdrawn is the likely consequence. Offer to come back after class and do extra work. If you work very hard now on your teacher may be more willing to help you pass. Do all the work it takes to get to a c.

@T26E4 it was the only test we’ve had this quarter, which is why it dropped my grade so low. most other assignments were homework which is only 10 points each, so the one test grade which was worth 100 points screwed me up big time.

Probably should have mentioned that it’s only this quarter I’m failing. I’ve passed the previous two with B’s.

Does your school display quarter grades on transcripts or semester grades? If all colleges see is a semester grade and yours will total a B or C then you might be alright.

Definitely explain the situation to your teacher and see if there’s anything you can do to get the grade up to a C. See what grades you need to get on the rest of the course assignments/tests to get that grade up and work hard at it as well.

Talk to your teacher and explain the situation. I can’t imaging one failed exam leads to an F in a class.

An F will very likely yield a rescission. Quarter grades, though, might not be sent, so get that grade up for the semester! Seriously, a D will slightly alleviate the danger, and a C will almost surely put you safely out of harm’s way. Go ingratiate yourself to your teacher, do extra work, seek extra help–ANYTHING that can help you get that grade up. This is serious, @radvioli

I retook the test. I’m just waiting for my teacher to post the grade up. Fingers crossed.
