Sophomore year I got a ~3.3 . Junior year I got a 4.2 year round . I think that’s a worthy improvement. The only knock is that I took only 1 AP class. For my senior year, I’m taking 3-4 ( counselor still deciding). I am the Key Club president at my school and a Youth Board Director at a non-profit organization outside of school. I got a 34 on the ACT. What are my chances of getting into UCI?

Intended major?
Senior year course rigor will help but grades will not be available for admission purposes. Upward grade trend from Soph to Junior year will have a positive impact.
I’m very undecided right now but as life goes on I’m leaning towards a business/economics major or a Film and Media Studies one. I’m also considering Software engineering. Are any of these majors popular? I’ve heard that popular majors are harder to get into. Do you recommend any that favors my available resume and grades? Finally, how do you feel about computer game science? It is a good major? I’m interested in that one.
UCI Business and Software Engineering would be very competitive and you need solid test scores and a UC GPA of 4.0+. Not sure about Film and Media studies, but all majors at the UC’s are competitive.
UCI admits into the University and then into your major, so you could get accepted into UCI but not into your preferred major (many times accepted as Undecided). Trying to switch into the competitive/popular majors can be problematic, so if you have a first choice major, it is best to try and get a direct admit. UCI does consider alternate majors, so I would definitely list one on your application.
The 2017 Freshman profile is not available until August, but here is the 2016 profile. For the best chances, you want to be at or above the 50th percentile.
GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students
High School UC GPA: 3.93 - 4.22
ACT Composite Score: 25 - 32
SAT Critical Reading: 530 - 670
SAT Mathematics: 590 - 740
Average GPA for Business was 4.15
Average GPA for SE was 4.09
Average GPA for Film and Media Studies was 4.05.
Your ACT score is solid, but UCI does love those 4.0+ UC GPA’s.
