I am currently considering dropping one of my classes for a "W". To provide context, here is my situation:

I am a history major applying to transfer in the Fall of 2010. I currently have a 4.0, and have completed all IGETC and major pre-reqs. This semester, I took way more units than I needed, one of these classes being an online english class (note, this was just for fun, not one of the two major english classes required for transfer). However, at this point in the semester I have realized that I will not be able to finsh all the work in time and get an A.

Even after dropping the class, I will still have more units than needed to be considered a full time student, and it will be my first "W".

How much would this impact my chances of getting in at Berkeley or UCLA?

It will not hurt you. Here’s something that might help

"Generally, if you have one “W” on your transcript, it is not going to be the reason that you are not admitted to UC Berkeley. The Admissions Office will do a comprehensive review of your application to see if you have at least 60 UC transferable units completed by the end of Spring 2010. They will also want to see that you have completed the general education requirements for your college, as well as your major requirements. Then they will look at your GPA and the pattern of your grades at college, as well as your employment history and the extra-curricular activities in which you are participating.

Considering all of the information they are looking at, having one “W” is usually not going to be a problem for you. Having said that, if you feel you need to explain the “W”, then go ahead and say something about it in your personal statement so that the readers have a better understanding of why you have the “W”."
