How much could one A- on midyear report affect admissions?

Overall, I've gotten all A's except one A- my sophomore year. This year I decided to take 6 AP classes and I think I might get an A- in one of them for term two. Will this be a big deal to colleges? It is seemingly insignificant, but at the same time..I don't know. I worry about stuff like this. What do you guys think? I'm doing everything I can to get it up to an A, but just in case. Should I add something in my common app about it? Thanks!

I guess it should also be said I'm applying to a couple Ivy's as well as other competitive colleges. I also know I'm going into this knowing I have a good chance of getting rejected anyway, even if I had a perfect gpa.

Don’t be a grade grubbing grind! It won’t matter at all for any college. Yes admit rates are low but they aren’t based on such trivialities. If you mention this instead of something important in your common application it will really be a misstep.

A-'s are not worth worrying about at all. Even one or two B’s is usually not worth worrying about, but at least it’s more reasonable than worrying about an A-. Really, I’m not trying to look down on you or anyone else that frets over A-'s, but honestly, what’s your reasoning that an A- matters compared to an A? It’s the same letter grade. A B would be a different story, but like I said, even a few of those aren’t worth worrying over in the long run.

I’ve never personally thought of A-'s as anything concerning, but if you look at my transcript, you see a supposed “downward trend” in my grade ever since freshman year. I went from all A’s to mostly A-'s now in my senior year. So what? My school uses the 4.0 scale, so I’ve still got a 4.0. Perhaps an A- would actually make some sort of noticeable impact if your school calculates GPA out of 100 (like what, maybe lower your average half a point, if even that?), but even then, it’s definitely not worth worrying over. One single grade that’s still considered an A regardless if it’s a low A? Your time is much better spent working on and polishing your actual applications to colleges.

Thanks for answering. I guess deep down I didn’t think it would be a big deal. I’m just a little overwhelmed by the whole process. I love the support. Haha. Thanks again!

Best of luck on your college applications. I understand the stress all too well myself, and while some people might say that you shouldn’t worry and just relax, I’d personally say that a healthy dose of worry keeps you on your toes about what you’re doing. However, don’t worry in excess - then it really does become nothing but detrimental.
