how much credit does your teacher deserve for your score??

how much credit are you guys willing to give your teachers for your score? did they prepare you enough for the exam, did they teach well, or did they under prepare you?

personally, i feel like i did so well on my tests because of my teachers. they taught well, were difficult, and really concentrated on the AP material and preparing my class.

overview

Calc AB: 5 .. grade: B+ .. very tough class.. average was about C+/B. amazing teacher and i'm sure everyone got 3+.

US History: 5.. grade: A-.. not so tough class.. good teacher who lectures a lot but knows what he's talking about.

English Lang.: 3.. grade: B+ :( i feel like i let my teach down. great teacher. great class. i just don't know what happened.

Euro History: 4.. grade: A.. most difficult class(took it last year), demanding teacher but most respected in school.

basically i give a lot of credit for my success on the AP exams to my teachers! next year i'm going to have another sweet group of AP teachers lol!

so what do you guys think looking back at your 2008 AP year or AP career? haha

Statistics: 5..grade: A+ ..I was so interested in the topic that I absorbed every word he said. He is my favorite teacher and I believe he deserves a lot of the credit for my 5 (I didn't study AT ALL for the AP test; the only prep I had was the 2 multiple choice tests in class and the in-class AP problems)

English Lang: 4..grade:B ..You really can't study for this class, but we had about 15-20 in-class essay prompts and a few practice multiple choice tests. His input on my writing was always insightful, so he deserves a lot of credit as well.

USH: Grade not available yet..grade:B..Another very amazing teacher. I could never memorize facts until he started teaching me.

Physics C Mech and E+M: 5s on both (Grade = 101% unweighted), I give my teacher about 90% credit. She taught us all of the material but rather than reviewing for the AP exam like most AP teachers do before the exam, she moved on to special relativity and standard model (ugh). Very good teacher though.

Chemistry: 5 (Grade = 94% unweighted), I give my teacher 85% credit. I never took a decent first year chemistry course (like Chem honors) so I had to teach myself some of the basics before taking the AP exam. My teacher was good though

Euro: 4 (Grade = 94% unweighted), I didn't really care about this course but I give my teacher 100% credit for my decent score as I did no studying whatsoever outside of class.

Biology: 5 and 750 Bio-E (A+ every quarter) - My teacher did a horrible job teaching and every bit of bio that I know came from my countless hours reading the textbook and Cliff's AP. We did no in-class test prep. Deserves no credit for my 5.

Calc BC: 5 (A every quarter) - My teacher did not teach very much. Wrote a problem on the board each period for us to work on and that was the whole class, pretty much. Did give some test prep resources, however. Did not really mention series/sequences. Deserves some credit for my 5.

Biology: 5 and 790 on Bio M (A+ every quarter) - my teacher did an awesome job. This was his 3rd year teaching and only 2nd year teaching AP Biology. He really came through for me and probably overprepared me while still making it interesting.

Stats: 5 (A+ every quarter) - this was only the 3rd year my teacher had taught AP Stats. Everyone in my class took it so they wouldn't have to take Calculus and they didn't care about the class, but he really taught me everything I needed. Honestly, he taught me everything that was on the AP Test 100%. I owe my 5 to him

American: 4 (A- to A+ as the year progressed) - My teacher was a jerk, but he did teach us a lot. I feel that if i had actually studied for this exam, i could have pulled off a 5, but what's done is done and the fact is that i didnt so i now have a 4. Overall, he deserves majority of the credit for my 4

As a teacher myself, I think most students have a natural score that they would get with merely an average teacher. Anytime I surpass that score with a kiddo of mine, I feel pretty good about it; anytime I don't reach that score, something didn't go right, and I feel I need to reevaluate.

I had one student my first year teaching AP Calculus who was nothing short of amazing. I knew that as long as I didn't @#$% things up, she would get a 5 even if she fell asleep after the first half of the free response. As long as I wasn't wretched, she was destined for a 5. Did I influence her success? Probably only minimally, if at all (although modest as she was, she gave me more credit than was due).

I had another student the same year who was transferred out of the other teacher's class at the semester. The other teacher told me that this kid would hurt my pass rate, and that I needed to get this kid dropped. The student was even confident at this point that he wouldn't pass the exam, and only switched classes (rather than dropping) because his counselor begged him to try my class. I worked with him a lot on the way for the next three months. He gets a 4. I'm convinced I had a lot to do with this 4.

And, of course, no matter how talented the teacher, the motivation of the students involved is a huge factor. Some teachers are clearly better motivators than others, but there also is usually only so much that one can do.

I suspect that a lot of the answers to the credit question depends on the circumstances behind them.

European History (3): This class was a complete joke. Everyone ditched, people cheated, and no one read or paid attention. I slept in class all year long and didn't do a single reading assignment. So, well, I give the teacher credit. I was just lazy and unmotivated, and hated this class. =)

Statistics (4): I give the teacher some credit. I never paid attention in class, but while the teacher lectured, I just did all the homework assignments in class and never studied. Our teacher was pretty helpful in giving us quizzes every couple of days though. If I studied some more before the test, I'm sure I could've gotten a 5.

English Literature (4): Teacher was pretty helpful here. He assigned us reading assignments (I sparknoted them all though... sparknotes really does work, at least in high school, no matter what teachers say) for books of literary merit. He also gave us in-class ap essay prompts once in a while that helped.

Calculus BC (5/5): I can't believe I got a 5 in Calculus. I mostly just slept in the back all year, and I didn't really know much. I think I only knew the AB stuff really well. The teacher was pretty cool, but I mostly learned off my friend. =)

interesting thread..

Biology: 5 and 800 on SAT II Biology M. As both semesters. My teacher deserves all the credit.. Still an inspiration to me. This class was so difficult, omg.

Chemistry: 3, Bs both semesters. I was miserable in this class. I simply hated it. Teacher was ok but I had no motivation to do well. But then I guess the teacher helped me pass the exam. =]

English Language: 3, Bs both semesters. Teacher was pretty bad.. but when we went over AP materials, I learned valuable techniques and strategies required to succeed on the AP exam. I suck at English.. This was my hardest class. ._O

European History: 4, As both semesters. Great teacher. I hated the content of this class. Not much more to say.

=D

Biology: 5 + 800 on SAT II M. A+ both sem. He meant well, it was his first year ever teaching, but I don't think I really learned very much in class. It may have been because I didn't pay attention though and just studied the night before for tests, which had ridiculous curves, hence the grades. I had to study by myself for the tests a lot, but that may have just been due to my not caring when I was supposed to be learning it.

Chem: 4 A both sem. Sigh. I loved my teacher so much. Favorite class, this is the reason I'm disappointed in the 4. I give her all the credit, I had such a great time in the class and learned so much. She prepared us so well, so it's a let down that I didn't do as well as I know I could have and should have, which is entirely my fault.

Psych: 5 CC class, A. I had a good teacher, obviously it wasn't an actual AP class so it wasn't geared toward that, but I still learned a lot. I had to study out of class for the test, but the stuff that I did know, I knew really well. I'll always be grateful that class the night before the test we went over Asch's conformity study (not that you really had to know it, such an easy question).

World History: 5 A+/A. Opposite of chem teacher. Didn't prepare us at all. I actually have no idea where my grade came from as I only glanced over prep book the night before.

AP U.S. History (5) - Incredibly boring but fairly easy class. The teacher deserves next to no credit for my score because I didn't need her to read my textbook and then read the entire AMSCO review book prior to the exam. All she did during class was read off a PowerPoint or show us stupid movies. (Grade: B first semester, A second semester)

AP English Language (5) - I'm naturally good at English and writing essays but we definitely had an amazing teacher. She made us write about 20 in-class AP essays and several AP-style practice exams, so she definitely prepared us well. (Grade: A year-long)

AP Psychology (5) - The material seemed easy to me by the time the AP came around, but again, this could be due to the fact that the teacher was experienced and made us learn above and beyond the information that we needed for the exam (since it was technically an IB class). (Grade: B first semester, A second semester)

AP Spanish Language (?) - I haven't received this score yet, but it was definitely my most difficult class this year, and I predict a 3, maybe a 4 with some luck. Nonetheless, our teacher was excellent and drilled the grammar and exceptions of the language into our heads on a regular basis. She also gave us a sufficient amount of speaking and writing practice that I felt helped me on the exam. (Grade: B)

AP U.S. History (3)- I know that's a low score compared to people on here, but at my school, the passing rate for that class is very very low. My teacher does deserve a lot of credit, she helped me out a lot, provided me with flashcards and a studybook at no charge, and took time off during school holidays to have study sessions. I already called and thanked her.

AP Government (3)-Absolutely none, unfortunately. I don't think he was a good AP teacher but he was a nice guy haha. I didn't do anything in this class, never paid attention, etc, etc and I still passed?!? He never provided us with practice essay questions either.

AP Lit (3)- I feel bad, I know I let my teacher down. I got a 4 on Language (I had the same teacher for both) and on practice tests I always got 5's this year. It sucks, this was the one exam I thought I would get a 5 on.

AP Chem (1)-I pretty much let her down because she is the best chem teacher I have ever had. I don't think she prepared us well enough for the MC questions, though. Most of the homework and tests were the type you saw on the FRQ.

us history- 4 my teacher didn't prepare me at all, he was awful
statistics- 4 we didnt do a single practice frq or mc so i'd say thats pretty awful
calc bc-5 my teacher was really good, i didnt prepare at all and only used what he taught me
physics c- 4/2 my teacher was from india and didnt speak english very well and her teaching ability was pretty sub par as well, but she was nice...
microecon- 5 i took it online and spoke with my teacher maybe twice so i'm pretty sure i earned that 5

Ooh, neat idea.

Calculus AB - 4 - His class wasn't that hard if you did the work, the tests varied in difficulty, but he definitely prepared us well. His style of teaching and explaining things really helped us all understand the material well. He has about a 95% pass rate for his students on the exam, although he's predicted less passes this year, because of the sheer laziness of the students taking the class. (Grade: B+/A-)

English Literature and Composition - 4 -This teacher is a beast, and he two AP classes are the hardest in the school. She drills information into your head, and she drills it in there well. I think two students this year got an "A", and they were the first in about five years. I received a D+ on most of my essays, and so did the majority of kids in the class, and the mean, median and mode final grade is a C. She deserves a lot of credit for teaching us so well. (Grade: C+/C-)

Microeconomics - 4 - This was this particular teacher's first year teaching, and we had a rough start. We didn't really get cracking on either of the two tests until the last two months before, because out first semester really meant nothing in terms of the AP test. However, once we got cracking it got a lot better. She doesn't deserve as much credit as those other two teachers, however, because we really almost self-learned from Barron's AP those two months, but she was there to explain, and she did realize when her strategy wasn't working. I think she'll do a lot better this year. =] (Grade: A/B-senioritis, yanno. =P)

Macroeconomics - 4 - See Microeconomics.

Biology - 2 - Saved the worst for last here. =D A lot of has to do with the teacher. This is only his second year teaching, and we really spent most of the time talking about his kid, and non-Biology related things. He's there for his students when you want to talk about nonsense, but when you want to biology? Forget it. The only kids who probably passed are the kids who reread the text book. It's my own fault for not passing, though. While we were horribly prepared in class, I should have studied on my own, especially with that Cliff's book I bought, but I gave up and was much more worried about other things. ;P I blew off the class, too, so that might have something to do with it. lol (Grade C+ both)

All in all, I'm pleased with my grades. =]

Calculus BC: 5 Well, I took the AB Calculus in school, and my teacher totally drilled the information in my head... We spent over a month studying for the Calc AB exam, so she definitely deserves some credit. I self-studied for the BC part, so I guess I can give myself a big pat on the back. :D Oh, my grades in the class were always above 100.

Biology: 5 I didn't take AP Bio in school, since it wasn't offered, but I did take Honors Biology II twice (the second time was for fun, lol). I learned a lot, but I had to teach myself plant bio and ecology (but I really didn't cover it that much, so I don't understand how on earth I got a 5...). My grades were always above 100.

Psychology: 5 Again, I didn't take the class. I started preparing for the exam the night before and finished the morning of the exam (no joke). It was ridiculously easy. A monkey could pass this exam.

English Literature: 4 Ok, I actually took this class. I that the test was effing hard, and I was totally pwnd by the whole thing, especially the essays... Ugh. My teacher did on okay job preparing me, but I think she should have given us better novels to read and write about. W/e. My grades were always high As.

Statistics: ? Well, self-studied this one too. I thought the test was hard... I am guessing a 3 or 4. Meh. I spent my final class in the Honors Statistics room during her planning period, so I was the only one in the class, lol. I didn't really start preparing until three weeks before, and I regret doing that. I want College Board to hurry up and have my score ready.

US History: 5 - The teacher deserves very little credit; out of his two classes last year, only 2/50 kids even passed the AP test. He assigned reading, which I spent an excruciating amount of time on, and that paid off, but he only made it up to the beginning of WWII in our class...basically, I spent a ridiculous amount of time reading and trying to get through all the info, and winged it on the DBQ (we hadn't ever practiced one)

Statistics: 5 - Our teacher did an amazing job preparing us; she's an AP reader and knew exactly what we should cover, and we had a few weeks left to review before the test. A lot of credit to her.

APUSH: Grade: A/AP Score: 4
Best teacher I've ever had. I barely studied and I got a 4. It was also the hardest class I've ever taken and he's known as being the toughest teacher in the school. I can't believe I came out with an A.

Lang & Comp: Grade: B+/AP Score:4
This teacher graded really tough. I can't really say I owe my AP score to her because there's not really a set curriculum or anything. The MC is what kept me from getting a 5. I should have studied.

Latin Lit: Grade A-/AP Score:5
Prior to this teacher coming to my school, the AP Latin class (we hold the two different AP's in alternate years) average for the AP exam was a 2.5 or something crazy like that. This was his first year teaching an AP class and he couldn't have prepared us better. We got through all of the material by the last week in March and then started reviewing. I 110% owe him for my 5.

APUSH: 5, and he deserves a lot of credit. He's been teaching history since Jefferson was President.

AP Stat: 5, and she deserves some credit, as does my dad.

AP Chem: 5, and she deserves very little credit, but considering my original teacher was fired in March, she deserves mostly credit for peace of mind.

AP Eng Lang: 4, and she deserves all of the credit.

AP Chemistry - 5
Teacher gets 90% of credit. Awesome and kind teacher, and very helpful and funny.

AP World History - 4
Teacher gets .0000001% credit. worst teacher ever. She gets ALL her notes from coursenotes.org, and gets her tests from a special book for teachers only. For essays, she doesn't even know how to do them, so she gives everyone 70s on them. She blames us for everything, while she's the one who has no idea what she's doing... She just sits at her desk and makes us copy notes. I'm really happy about a 4.

i love how yeahallie took biology twice and the second time for fun...that inspires me =]

Hahahaha, thanks. It's all because of the teacher. She's amazing. She's basically a real-life Ms. Frizzle, but a little more sarcastic. lol It's so not fair though. She's actually teaching AP Bio next year...It's the first time offered at my school. I told her that I was mad at her for waiting until after I graduated to teach it, and she laughed.
