How much did you spend on college applications?

I'm still a senior in HS, but I'm curious to know how much other people have spent already.

I figure each college app is ~$50 or so dollars. Plus postage, sending SAT scores, and sending your CSS/Profile. So how much did you guys spend? How much do you think you SHOULD spend? How many colleges did you apply to?

I just did the math right now (I'm going to have my mom write the checks tonight) and never realized up until now how much I'm (well my parents) are going to spend already. I'm going to try and budget myself to under $1,000.

I spent like $175 on just the application fees, I believe. No postage. I don’t remember how much it cost to send my ACT and Profile. I can’t imagine I spent more than $200. I applied to six schools.

5 * 60 + 2 * 65 + 3 * 9 + 4 * 16 = $521 for 7 schools

Probably a couple bucks more on postage.

*** postage

Yup, $.44 currently. Four stamps on each envelope, not sure how much they were back in your day. But just under two bucks for each college, presently.

Between CollegeBoard fee waivers, QuestBridge, college-sponsored fee waivers, and other stuff, I paid $60 to send my SAT scores and about $5 in postage. I applied to eight schools and it cost me $65. I also made seven college visits (some by car, some by plane) for a total of $100. I didn’t pay for SATs or the AP exams. Yup. College has cost me about $165 so far. 30 extra hours at work this summer? No big deal.

I didn’t even calculate college visits. That probably bumps it up more, luckily all the colleges I’m applying to are within a 4 hour drive. And how much were your plane tickets? Just one ticket at $100 dollars seems like a steal.

I guess you could add like $80 to my >$200 estimate if you include visits. I visited two schools and had to pay for a night at a hotel for one and another actually charged for the visit.

I only visited colleges that paid for me to visit. The $100 was for three visits within a 2 hour radius that were not paid for. If I had paid all my own expenses, I would have paid:

8 x $65 = $520 (application fees)
8 x $16 = $128 + $9 = $137 (CSS/PROFILE)
6 x $20 = $80 (we have to pay for our transcripts except the first two)
4 x $45 = $185 (SAT and ACT, I think $45 is right)
8 x $9.50 = $76 (SAT scores)
3 x $275 = $825 (plane tickets)
3 x $50 = $150 (car trips)
2 x $50 = $100 (visit program fees)
4 x $86 = $344 (AP exam fees)

So the last year would have cost me $2417 or 403 hours on the clock. Thankfully… it only cost me $165. I’d like to pat myself on the back for actively saving $2252.

I was ***-ing at the postage thing because I did everything online. I think the only thing I mailed was a photocopy of my green card to Georgia Tech.
