How much do 1st semester grades matter?

As the college application season approaches I've come to the realization that I'll probably be deferred when I apply EA. What I would like to know is how much your 1st semester grades are taken in to consideration. I currently have a low GPA so if I get say a 4.0 first semester will it be enough to get me admitted, assuming all other factors are up to Michigan standards? Thank you.

Eh, I’d say it depends on how low your UW GPA is in the first place. You aren’t very specific about that. If it’s borderline, between a 3.7 and 3.8, I’d say you’ll have a chance if you pull off a 4.0 first semester. I wouldn’t get hopes up if you’re any lower than that, though, as UM admissions are more competitive than ever. The average GPA admitted this year was a 3.85.
There are also a number of other important factors to consider: Are you in state or out of state? Applying for Engineering or LSA? Have you taken a particularly difficult course load throughout high school (AP, Honors)?

well it really depends on your current GPA and ACT score, but if they defer you obviously you were considered for admission so it would be in your best interest to keep your first semester grades up so when they review your admission you’ll have that to possibly push you over the edge
