How much do AP scores matter in the admission process?

So, I just got my AP scores back and I did alright. These are all of my AP results from my sophomore and junior years.

AP Bio - 4
AP Calc AB - 3
AP Lang - 3
APUSH - 5
AP Macroeconomics - 3
AP Microeconomics - 5

So, as you can see, I have some pretty good scores in there, but I also have three 3s (yes, I realize they're not the end of the world, but I could've done better). Will it look bad to top colleges if I self-report the 3s on the Common App?

To my understanding, the only place that AP scores possibly show up is on the transcript. I believe the more important factor in the admissions process is the grade that you received throughout the whole year and colleges will primarily look at the score for credit purposes. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think there is a place on the common app for AP scores

@Jamoroso‌ is correct, although I think most schools don’t report AP scores on the transcript. Grades in that course and SAT II subject tests in that area is more important for admissions purposes as not all schools have APs. You can self report them if you think they will help you, but you don’t necessarily have to report all of them

You can self-report on the common app and omit what you do not want to report.

Thanks guys, but will it look bad if I self report the 3s? That’s what I’m asking.

If you do self report the AP score, they may use it to evaluate the your school grades.

@skieurope‌ where onthe commonapp do you self report, I looked through it I didnt see a section to do that

Click on the common app tab, then click on testing

Can a good score on the ap (5) make up for a poor grade (B- ) in the class?

@theanaconda Have the GC mention in his/her recommendation that this particular teacher is very challenging with grading, and your 5 will certainly lead credence to that.

I have the same question :frowning: Will it look bad to colleges if we report 3s?

@akacesfan‌ @ViolaBB‌ - Colleges use AP results for credit purposes, not for admissions. Heck, most of the AP scores don’t even come in until well after the admission deadline. They are much more interested in the rigor of your schedule, which of course makes the AP course a very good thing, and your grade in the class. Also, as was said, reporting of AP scores is very hit and miss, so it would be impossible to compare students that way.

Report none of them, report all of them, it really doesn’t matter. They only care about the 4’s and 5’s after you decide to attend their school so they can properly allocate credit and advise you properly on your freshman schedule.

I have heard that getting a low AP score in a class where you got a very high grade causes colleges to think the class was too easy (thus disregarding your high grade)…do you think this is true?

Thanks @fallenchemist Your answer swept away my concerns. I was really disappointed with my 3s because I worked hard for them throughout the year and it turns out that my effort did not pay off.

@ViolaBB - I understand you feeling that way now, but trust me you won’t regret the work. My own anecdote is that something similar happened to me with Calculus and so I started with Calc One my freshman year. I got to the class ready to take notes, of course. After 10 minutes I realized I knew a lot more than I thought I did, just listened to what the prof was really saying, got an understanding of calculus that was much deeper than what I could have possibly expected, and it paid off big time in the rest of my math courses, my physics courses, etc. I hope something similar happens for you. You might not get the college credit you wanted, but you will be much more prepared for your courses and hopefully you can turn that into a much richer experience than you otherwise would have had, instead of being bored. A lot depends on you. Work with the profs in those courses to leverage your prior work into higher level work.

@fallenchemist That’s a truly inspiring story! I’ll keep it in mind when I go to college. Perhaps I’m just too sensitive about my scores during the stressful college application process. Thank you a lot!!!

Here is a similar discussion half a month ago.

Of course you can make your own decision regarding which side you want to believe.
