How much do college language credits equate to in high school terms?

I get different impressions reading different things.
Ive read on 2 school sites with quarters systems, that one quarter equates roughly to one year of hs language (3 quarters= 3 years)

Is this the case for most all schools?

Please if you can, answer, and maybe give your experiences with HS and College foreign language classes.

i've heard that a 1 semester college class in spanish covers material in high school Spanish levels 1, 2, and 3, but i'm not sure either...

The main one i always hear is that
1 quarter=1 year HS.
So for example, 1 full year at a UC, U fo washington, or U of Chicago, is equivalent to 3 full years of high school (since the schools mentioned above are on quarter systems...although i think the scale might be slightly off, since at least Chicago is known to be extremely difficult...and i took japanese there and it was insane...although it was 3 week intensive so...)

It depends on the high schools' program and probably the colleges' program . Our high school has a lousy French program, but really tough Spanish program. Four years of high school Spanish is equal to 3 years of Spanish at the university we're considering. I'm stll trying to sort out AP tests and CLEP tests.

Many years ago, three years of hs Spanish enabled me to test out of two 5-credit introductory courses at university, so I went straight into a reading course and a composition course.

It does vary a lot though, depending on the university and the language. It is best to talk with a representative of the language dept at the university you are considering.

Bumped for my sake!

I took 5 years of non-college French (8th through 12th grade, no AP classes) and at Swarthmore, I placed into 4th semester French through the placement test. It varies per school but 1 quarter = 1 year sounds pretty reasonable.
