How much do emory students care about grades?

I know the "typical" students work crazily monday through thursday and lays back on the weekends until Sunday.

Okay, but what I mean is, do they constantly talk about academics inbetween classes/outside of classes or do the students love more to talk about other things than academics?

No, we talk about academics all the time. At least my friends and I do.

My fraternity does this stupid little move every rush where they ask the freshmen what they’re thinking of majoring in and then introduce them to a brother with the same major. So any time someone says math he’s immediately brought over to me, you know as if we were gonna talk about math classes for 20 minutes. I have yet to meet a math major that wants to talk about school.

On the other hand, my roommate is in poli sci and really likes talking about school, his homework assignments, upcoming tests, how long his papers have to be, what he’s learning, etc. One of my other friends actually isn’t my friend anymore because all she ever talked about were her classes. I kept trying to change the subject but it somehow always came back to school. It became so boring that I basically decided I couldn’t be friends with her.

The point is you’re gonna find people all over the map, but with more people preferring to talk about other topics. Like I doubt anyone goes into rush dying to talk about their classes, and that’s why I called bringing it up a “stupid little move”. At the same time, not too many people MIND talking about school and will talk about it with you if that’s what you wanna do.

Thank you both. That’s a bit messed up. I stay away from academics as much as possible except due dates and stuff that’s needed for planning. I don’t mind talking but i’d rather learn new stuff in conversations than talking about stuff that we’ve already learned. The “all over the map” part is comforting.

Anybody met any people who like to talk about chess? Or is good at chess?

I’ve yet to meet anyone who has talked about chess.

ha I play chess all the time online, but I don’t really talk about it. You should join chess club if you like to play tho.

My friends rarely talk about our classes unless it’s finals week. And no, I’ve never met a person who likes chess but I know a chess club exists on campus.

It just depends on your group of friends.

My friends are nerdy and eccentric whose idea of a good time is just sitting around smoking cigarettes and discussing philosophy, so we’re more inclined to talk about school than others.

It’s one thing to discuss topics covered in class, but another to merely discuss assignments, tests, and grades.

My friend and I would talk/complain about Soria’s class all the time.

Discussing grades is stupid, though. Unless a teacher is legitimately unfair.

From what I have heard, it’s like high school; you have a group of kids who constantly talk about school, some who are half and half, and others who generally avoid it unless it’s about unfair grades etc.

In every school, I’m sure you can find some people who don’t want to sit around talking about their homeworks…if you can’t, then that is some homogeneous student body.

Those are some super good information. Looks like everyone can fit in at Emory.

Thank you all!
